LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received double-doubles from Christina Barclay and Jessilyn Conicelli and had four players score in double-figures, cruising to an 81-57 victory of The Master's College in a GSAC Tournament First-Round game on Wednesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 20-10 on the season, their second-straight 20-win season, and advance to the semifinal to face No. 1-seed Vanguard in Costa Mesa on Friday. The Mustangs end their season at 16-13.

Barclay and Conicelli helped Biola dominate inside and the rest of the Eagles shut down the high-scoring Master's offense. Conicelli scored 18 points and added 13 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season and third against the Mustangs in as many games this season. She also added four steals, two blocks and two assists.

Barclay was also impressive inside, scoring 12 points and adding 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, three of which have come against The Master's. She also had three blocks and a pair of assists in the win.

Slow starts had been something of a problem for the Eagles over the final few weeks of the regular season, but not tonight as the Eagles wasted no time jumping all over the Mustangs. The Master's led just once in the game and that came very early at 4-3. The two teams remained close for the next three or so minutes before Biola pulled away for good.

Leading 8-7 at the 15:46 mark, the Eagles used a 19-4 run over the next six minutes to pull away with a pair of free throws by Lauren Gustafson making it a 27-11 game. The Mustangs would record just two field goals over a 10-minute stretch in the first half and trailed 40-22 at the half.

The Master's opened the second half with a three-pointer by Jenna Reed, the first of the game by the Mustangs, but Biola responded with a 15-0 run over the next six minutes to go up 55-25 with 14:35 to play. The Eagles would lead by as many as 31 in the contest and cruised to the victory.

While Biola shot 48 percent in the game including 44 percent from beyond the arc, the story was the defense as the Eagles held The Master's to just 28.6 percent shooting. The Mustangs managed to hit just 7-of-27 shots in the first half and went 0-of-6 from three-point range.

"I really liked the way our group played defense tonight," said Head Coach Ken Crawford. "We really controlled the tempo and kept their shooters from getting hot.

"The Master's has got some tough individual players and I thought we played well against them defensively," said Crawford. "We didn't let them hit a three in the first half and that was an important thing for us."

Junior forward Jennifer French recorded 14 points for the Eagles and added eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Charrise Reece had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, contributing four assists and a blocked shot to the effort.

The Master's Annie Gillespie led all scorers with 20 points with nine coming from the free throw line. Erica Inge added 11 for The Mustangs.

Biola managed to pick up the victory on a night which saw two of the top four seeds upset on their home courts. The GSAC Co-Champions, Azusa Pacific, suffered one of the most shocking upsets in recent memory, falling 76-67 to the No. 7-seed Hope International University. The Royals, who lost by 11 at home to Biola on Monday, received 28 points and a perfect 13-for-13 shooting night from Champ Hood.

The other upset came down in San Diego where No. 6-seeded Westmont College came back from a 15-point, second half deficit to pull out a 64-62 win over the No. 3 seed Point Loma Nazarene.

The top seed in the tournament did not suffer the same fate, however, as Vanguard took care of No. 8 Concordia, 95-67. The Eagles will travel to Costa Mesa to take on the Lions on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The one thing all of the upsets does for Biola is make Friday's game a bit more interesting. Since the highest remaining seed hosts the conference championship game, a Biola victory over Vanguard on Friday would meed the Eagles would host the title game against either Hope or Westmont on Monday.
