Overtime Battle Slips Away from Eagles

The Biola Eagles nearly overcame Vanguard but would fall 67-65 in overtime.

COSTA MESA, Calif.--- The Biola women's basketball team nearly overcame Vanguard University but would fall 67-65 in overtime. The Eagles put forth a valiant effort against the PacWest Conference's current frontrunner but wouldn't be able to hold on to their lead in the final 15 minutes.

The Eagles shined in the second and third quarters. After shooting 37.5 percent in the first quarter, Biola bounced back with 64.29 and 66.67 percent field goal percentages in the second and third quarters. Alyssa Kubo led BU's offensive effort, totalling 10 points in the second and third quarters. Laney Grider recorded seven, Grace Moyers had six, Jaycee Goldsmith and Hanne Nybo added five, MiaGrace Delahoz and Aliyah Bantolina recorded three and Camden Miller chipped in two.

Biola earned a 14-point advantage as they headed into the final frame but Vanguard showed late fight. The Lions would out-score the Eagles 20-6 in the fourth quarter which would allow them to tie the game at 58-58 by the end of the frame.

After surrendering a game-tying basket in the final seconds of regulation, Biola regrouped and continued to fight in overtime. Vanguard struck first in the extra period with a jumper and a layup to take a 62–58 advantage. Biola answered at the free-throw line as Laney Grider calmly knocked down two shots to trim the deficit to two.

The Lions extended their lead to five on a three-pointer midway through overtime, but the Eagles refused to back down. Aliyah Bantolina converted inside to keep Biola within striking distance, and with 39 seconds remaining, Jaycee Goldsmith buried a clutch three-pointer to even the score at 65–65.

Vanguard responded on its next possession with a go-ahead layup with 10 seconds left. Biola had one final opportunity, but a contested three at the buzzer did not fall, sealing the 67–65 decision.

Grider led the Eagles with 18 points, six assists and seven rebounds, while Alyssa Kubo added 12 points. Goldsmith contributed 10 points, including the late overtime triple, and Hanne Nybo recorded nine rebounds to anchor the effort on the glass.

Biola fell 12-13 overall and 9-11 in the PacWest Conference while Vanguard improved 20-4 and 16-3 in the PacWest.

The Eagles have two games left in their 2025-26 season. They play CUI on Thursday, Feb. 26 and have senior night on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Azusa Pacific.
