RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In a game which saw 58 fouls called in 40 minutes, Biola seemed to get the short end of the stick as California Baptist headed to the free throw line 50 times in the contest and used the advantage to upset the No. 13 Eagles 74-63 in a GSAC game at Van Dyne Gym on Saturday night.
The Eagles fall to 6-2 on the season and to 1-1 in GSAC play while the Lancers improve to 7-3 overall and even their record at 1-1 in conference.
Biola had three players in double figures led by
Jennifer French, who poured in 14 points.
Emily Drews contributed 13 points while Jessilyn Concicelli added 12 points.
However, neither team was able to get into much of a flow with so many fouls called and five players fouling out of the contest. In addition to having 33 fouls called on them, the Eagles had a poor night shooting from long range, hitting just 4-of-33 from three-point range on the evening for a season-low 12 percent.
The Eagles fell behind early in the contest as Cal Baptist jumped out to a 10-5 lead early thanks to a quick three-pointer by Brenna Hahn at the 12:34 mark of the first period. Biola chipped away and cut the lead to two at 12-10 on a layup by
Lauren Gustafson.
But the Lancers quickly went on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 23-10 lead with eight minutes to go before the half. Cal Baptist would stretch the lead to as many as 17 in the first half and took a 38-25 lead to halftime.
In the second half, the Lancers would stretch the lead to 15 a few minutes into the second half. Biola would respond with a big 19-5 run over an eight-minute stretch, sending Cal Baptist to the line just six times over that stretch. Biola took its first lead of the game a few minutes later on a pair of free throws by
Megan Jackson, going up 51-50 with 7:30 to go.
To their credit, the Lancers responded to the setback, using a 15-3 run to go back on top 65-54 with 3:35 left. Biola pulled back to within six on a number of occasions down the stretch but could get no closer as Cal Baptist hit 9-of-12 from the charity stripe down the stretch for the win.
V.V. Vasciunaite led the Lancers with 29 points while Hahn added 20 points.
Biola has a tough road ahead this week, traveling to face Azusa Pacific on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., then facing Vanguard University in a home contest on Saturday, also at 5:30 p.m.
