Conicelli's Late Bucket Gives Eagles 86-84 Win Over Cal Baptist

Concicelli has 20 points and 10 rebounds in victory

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Jessilyn Conicelli got an offensive rebound and putback with under five seconds to play to give Biola a big 86-84 road win over California Baptist in a GSAC game on Saturday night in Riverside.

The Eagles improve to 18-10 on the season and move into a fifth-place tie in the GSAC with The Master's College at 10-9. The Lancers drop to 17-12 overall and are tied for seventh at 9-10 in conference play.

Biola shot an impressive 54.5 percent in the game and held off a strong second half performance by Cal Baptist to pull off the victory.

The Eagles were led by Conicelli, who poured in 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. She added 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal. Senior Megann Alberts contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Biola had to contend with the Lancers' Jeanine Deno, who poured in 34 points in the game. Nicole Davis--who has torched Biola throughout her impressive career--scored 19 points and added five assists.

The game was close through the first 10 minutes of the first half, though Cal Baptist held a 22-20 lead with 9:46 remaining in the period. Biola then used a 12-0 run to break the game open a bit to open up a 32-22 just five minutes later. The Lancers would close to within four, but the Eagles headed to the locker room with a 43-36 lead.

In the second half, the Lancers took back the lead briefly with a 7-0 run to go up 47-46. But the lead was short-lived as Biola responded with an 8-0 run to take a 54-47 lead, though 15 minutes still remained in the game. The two teams continued runs back and forth until Deno hit a layup to give the Lancers an 81-79 lead with 2:12 to play.

Conicelli was fouled on the next trip down the court and made the first song, but missed the second. However, she jumped into the fray and secured the rebound, then hit a jumper in the paint to give the Eagles the lead right back.

After a pair of missed three-point attempts by Cal Baptist, Charrise Reece hit a driving lay-up with 46 seconds left to put Biola up 84-81. But the Lancers had one more chance and Deno hit a jumper in the paint and was fouled. She would hit the free throw to complete the three-point play to tie the game up with 30 seconds to play.

But Biola, which had been struggling in tight games over the last three weeks, finally put it all together as Conicelli pulled down an offensive rebound and hit the put-back to give the Eagles an 86-84 lead with five seconds left.

Cal Baptist had a final shot to tie the game as Brianne Estell was fouled with just one second to play, but she missed both free throws and the Eagles secured the rebound and held on for the win.

The Eagles now move into an interesting position in the GSAC standings thanks to a big upset. The Master's, fresh off a 15-point win at Biola on Tuesday, knocked off second-place Point Loma Nazarene also by a 15-point margin. That moves the Mustangs into a tie with the Eagles for fifth place in the conference, just one game behind Azusa Pacific. Should both The Master's and Biola win (or lose) their final games on Monday (Mar. 2), they would finish in a tie for either fourth or fifth depending on the outcome of the Azusa Pacific vs. Westmont game. Since both teams have mirrored each other in GSAC play, the tie-breaker would come down to a vote by the conference coaches to determine final seeding for the GSAC tournament. It is believed to be the first time in conference history that such a tie-breaker would occur.

Biola closes out the regular season on Monday against Hope International University at 5:30 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium. The game will be the final home regular-season game for the Eagles' lone senior, Megann Alberts. She will be honored at the conclusion of the game in a special senior night ceremony.
