Biola Falls to No. 12 Point Loma in overtime, 60-50

Concielli leads Eagles with 17 points and 10 rebounds in loss

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore forward Jessilyn Conicelli recorded 17 points and added 10 points, but it wasn't enough as mistakes down the stretch cost Biola in a 60-50 overtime loss to Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles, ranked No. 19 in the latest NAIA National rankings, open the second half of GSAC play with the tough loss and fall to 13-6 overall and 6-6 in conference. Meanwhile, the Sea Lions, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, pick up their 12th-straight victory to improve to 15-4 and 9-2 in conference action.

Biola opened the game strong and looked like it may cruise to an easy win. Conicelli's jumper in the lane with 8:38 to go before the half gave the Eagles a 20-9 lead in the early going. Biola still led by nine at 25-16 with 2:31 before halftime, but Point Loma scored the final six points of the half to cut the lead to just three at 25-22.

In the second half, Jennifer French hit an early three-pointer to end the nearly three-minute scoreless drought for the Eagles and extend the lead back to six. However, Point Loma Nazarene managed to take its first lead of the night just three minutes later on a three-pointer by Brianna Colon which made it 29-28. The two teams then battled back and four with Biola holding a slight edge at 42-39 with 9:20 to play thanks to a jumper in the paint by Lauren Gustafson.

After the Sea Lions tied the score on a three-pointer by Amanda Franz one minute later, Biola responded quickly with a jumper by Conicelli to go back on top 44-42 with 7:58 left in regulation. However things started to get bad for the Eagles as Conicelli would pick up her fifth foul just under 30 seconds later, leaving them without their leading scorer and rebounder the rest of the way.

Point Loma tied the score at 44-44 on a jumper by Franz with 4:47 remaining, but Christina Barclay once again put the Eagles on top with a put-back 30 seconds later which made it 46-44. Single free throws by Colleen Planeta and Amanda Franz nearly two minutes apart would tie the score but it would be Biola who would have the last chances in regulation.

A foul by Franz would send Megann Alberts to the line for a 1-and-1 chance, but she missed the front end. The Eagles managed to secure the offensive rebound and ran down the clock. With 11 seconds left, Barclay had a shot underneath rattle off and #Chelsea De Luca#'s follow-up shot missed. After a quick scramble the Eagles got the ball back near midcourt. Charrise Reece dribble around the top of the key for a few seconds before finding Barclay wide open underneath. However, Barclay's easy lay-up came after the final buzzer sending the game to overtime.

After a pair of free throws by Alberts gave the Eagles an early two-point edge in the extra session, the Sea Lions went on a 7-0 run over the next minute to take a commanding five-point lead. Point Loma would hit its free throws down the stretch and escaped with the 10-point win.

French finished the game with 10 points and added a pair of steals and four rebounds for the Eagles while Barclay recorded eight points and eight boards.

For the Sea Lions, Franz had an impressive night with 22 points while Colon added 13 points and four boards. The Eagles again did a great job at stopping Point Loma's leading offensive threat, Colleen Planeta. She managed just seven points--well off her 22 points average which leads the GSAC--though she did recorded 10 rebounds on the night.

The Sea Lions made the most of 18 Biola turnovers, turning them into 21 points. The Eagles, on the other hand, forced 14 turnovers, but could only record eight points off of them.

The loss extends Biola's home losing streak to three games and makes the team 1-4 at home in GSAC play despite holding a 5-1 conference mark in road games.

Biola will look to change those numbers on Tuesday (Feb. 3), hosting Fresno Pacific University in a GSAC game at Chase Gymnasium. The Eagles will be looking to exact a bit of revenge as the Sunbirds are the lone team to be Biola on the road this season.
