BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Five Biola players reached double-figures and the Eagles scored 62 points in the paint in a 94-63 non-conference win over Whittier College on Wednesday afternoon at Chase Gymnasium.
Biola closes out 2008 with an 8-3 record, matching the second best start in the last 20 years. The Poets drop to 6-3 on the season.
The Eagles were led by freshman guard Charrise Reece and sophomore center Christina Barclay, who each scored 15 points. Reece added four steals, six rebounds and three assists on the night while Barclay recorded eight rebounds.
However, the story of the game came inside, as the Eagles outscored Whittier 62-8 in the paint and held a 57-35 edge in rebounds. The domination inside made Biola's outside game unnecessary as the Eagles went 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. It marked the first time in over three years that Biola failed to hit a three-pointer in a game.
Biola opened up the game strong, using an 11-0 run to go up 19-4 just five minutes into the game. The Eagles would stretch the lead to as many as 19 in the first half and took a 49-33 lead into the half. It was more of the same in the second as Biola scored 12 of the first 14 points of the half to stretch the lead to 61-35 with 14:37 to go. The Eagles kept the peddle down and cruised to the 31-point victory.
Sophomore forward Megan Jackson had an impressive game, scoring a career-high 14 points and adding six rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Freshman Emily Drews contributed 12 points, five rebounds and two assists while senior forward Megann Alberts added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in just 19 minutes.
Despite playing just 14 minutes in the game due to foul trouble, sophomore forward Jessilyn Conicelli scored nine points and added eight rebounds.
Conicelli wasn't the only player in foul trouble as 43 total fouls were whistled in the game. Biola committed 25 of those fouls which led to 37 free throw attempts by the Poets. They would convert 27 of those giving them nearly half of their 63 points.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 6), hosting GSAC arch-rival Azusa Pacific University at 5:30 p.m.
