Through the Years
Under Goodman's guidance, records were broken across both tennis programs in
2022.
The men's team surged past their previous best win total and ended the year with an 18-9 mark. Throughout the 2022 season, the Eagles climbed the ITA National Rankings to as high as No. 18. Biola easily advanced to the PacWest Championships as the third seed and continued to secure a fifth-place finish, thanks to superb play from its two First Team All-PacWest selections,
Sebastian Herrera and
Alexei Prokopchuk. Biola went on to make program history once again when they advanced to the NCAA West Regional stage for the first time. Herrera capped the year for the Eagles with an ITA Singles All-American nod.
BU women's tennis also notched its best record in program history with a 21-6 mark in 2022. The team earned a No. 10 rating by ITA and logged notable wins over No. 7 Hawaii Pacific and No. 11 Azusa Pacific. Biola went on a phenomenal 14-match winning streak, which contributed to their third-seed ranking entering the PacWest Championships.
Mary Brascia and
Colbeyshae Emery carried the load for BU, dominating the No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. The duo each made the All-PacWest Team for their singles play and as doubles partners. The women's team ended the season with a sixth-place finish at the conference championships.
For his work in 2022, Goodman was named Biola Athletic Department's first Coach of the Year at the end of the year Gala.
In
2021, Goodman led the Biola men to continue improving upon strides made in 2020. They posted their best complete overall season in program history, hitting the crucial 500 winning percentage mark, at 10-10 overall. The Eagles received a tough draw in the PacWest Conference Championships, having to face the twelfth-best team in the nation, Hawai'i Hilo. The Eagles fell short in the first match, but continued to battle out the tournament eventually receiving a sixth-place finish at the PacWest Championships. Prokopchuk was named First Team All-PacWest, and ended the regular season 9-5 on the first court.
Under Goodman's leadership, 2021 was also good to the women tennis program who had a remarkable season. They posted their first winning season in 27 years, ending the year with a 13-8 overall record. During the season, they went on an impressive nine-match winning streak that included home and away matches. The women placed fourth at the PacWest Championships and proceeded to advance to the NCAA West Regionals for the first time in program history.
Emery was given a First Team All-PacWest nod in 2021. Emery led the Eagles on the first court with a 12-2 overall record and had a ten-match winning streak.
Even with the
2020 campaign being shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Coach Goodman's women's and men's tennis squads established themselves as contenders in the PacWest Conference and programs on the rise. The men's tennis posted a four-match win streak (including two wins over conference opponents), defeated Point Loma for the first time in program history and came within one point of wins against UC San Diego, Azusa Pacific and Concordia. Meanwhile, women's tennis also posted a four-match win streak with two victories over conference opponents, posted a winning 5-3 record at the Biola Tennis Center and saw a new program record set by freshman Emery.
Emery was part of a strong recruiting class for Goodman that the Eagles plan to build on for years to come. Emery set a new program record with 10-straight singles wins at the No. 1 position while Prokopchuk did the same with his six-match winning streak at No. 1 for the men. Brooke Fager stepped into the No. 2 singles spot as a freshman and joined Emery in the No. 1 doubles team, while Faith Grisham also posted some key doubles win in her first collegiate season.
The
2019 season was a statement year for both the men's and women's programs, both for their play and for the improving facilities at the Biola Tennis Center that brought six resurfaced red courts and full play-by-play broadcasts to several matches. The Eagles men's tennis team won 10 matches, including six at home and program-first victories over San Diego Christian and Westmont, and had two All-PacWest selections in Derek James and Edwyn Ramos. Biola Women's Tennis also saw drastic improvement, as the Eagles qualified for the PacWest Championships with two wins over PacWest opponents and posted the best home record in program history (8-3).
Both the men's and women's rosters turned in positive results in
2018 that they should be able to build on for the future. The men's team won five matches at the Biola Tennis Center and finished in sixth place at the PacWest Championships after defeating the Sonoma State Seawolves for the second time in as many meetings. The women's side was comprised entirely of underclassmen in 2018 and collected a number of individual accomplishments by the end of the season. The Eagles finished 2-1 in their final three matches at home and closed out the season with a clean sweep of Ottawa (Ariz.)
In
2017, the men's team climbed into the No. 24 spot of the NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll on Feb. 14. The women's roster made a good push at the end of the season with a first-round win in the GSAC Tennis Tournament against Westmont. It was also a build-up season for Biola's transition to NCAA Division II membership. Goodman scheduled matchups with five PacWest institutions for both men's and women's tennis in 2017.
Before Biola
Goodman returned to BU after serving as head coach for his alma mater, Azusa Pacific University. At Azusa Pacific, he was the women's tennis coach from 2014 to 2016. Prior to coaching at APU, he was the head men’s coach for the Eagles from 2012 to 2014.
Playing Career
Goodman played collegiate tennis at Azusa Pacific University. He garnered several accomplishments at Azusa Pacific including being named a four-time NAIA All-American who compiled a 63-28 singles record and a 92-21 mark in doubles play in four seasons. He was also a member of the Cougars' 2005 national championship team and was named GSAC Player of the Year in 2007.
Personal
Goodman resides in Covina, Calif. with his wife, Katy, and and their three children (Emma, Allison and Joseph).
