Slugfest Slips Away

Seven Eagles tally multi-hit games in defeat

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team looked to split the Cornerstone Cup with APU. After a combined 35 runs scored, the Eagles dropped the final game, 19-16.

Seven Eagles logged two or more hits with James Whitman and Oscar Knapp leading the team with three. Knapp, Kevin Villegas, and Adiel Torres all drove in three runs. Nick Madole drove in two while Josh McAninch, Cole Thomson, Luke Caruso, and Whitman all added solo RBIs.

After an eight run top of the first inning, APU was in control. Biola answered immediately with four runs of their own, cutting the deficit in half. After Caruso and Jonny Tewinkle reached base, Whitman drove in Caruso with an RBI double. Knapp hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Tewinkle. Thomson lined an RBI double and Torres collected an RBI on a ground out.

In the second, the Cougars scored twice more in the top half of the inning. Villegas launched his first homer of the year, giving BU momentum. Knapp roped a double to right field, Madole singled, Torres singled and Villegas doubled in his second at bat of the inning, bringing the Eagles to within one.

The Eagles gained their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third. An RBI double by Madole, a single by Torres and a double by McAninch plated the go ahead run.

APU answered quickly, tying the game in the top of the fourth. Knapp gave Biola the lead once more in the bottom half of the frame, scoring Whitman on an RBI single.

APU would go on to outscore the Eagles, 6-2 in the final three innings, to capture the win. Caruso drove in the final two runs for BU by way of an RBI single and a defensive miscue.

The Eagles move to 17-19 overall and 13-15 in conference. They will host the Hawaii Pacific Sharks for a four game set, with first pitch scheduled for April 11 at 12 p.m.
