Whitman Walks It Off

Whitman’s monster day fuels Biola’s gritty walk-off win over HPU

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team hosted the visiting Hawaii Pacific Sharks for the first of a four game series. The Eagles won in walkoff fashion, 8-7.

"We showed our toughness and grit again today." stated head coach Jesse Rodgers. "We were able to minimize some of the big innings which gave our offense a chance to score."

James Whitman had himself a day at the plate going 4-for-4, including a two home run game. He drove in five RBIs and scored three runs. Luke Caruso followed with three hits and an RBI. Oscar Knapp and Nicholas Whippo each collected an RBI in the win as well.

"Whit had a couple big home runs capping the game with the big walk off. I'm proud of the guys and their fight!"

Jacob Talbott got the start for BU, throwing five and a third innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out a career-high nine hitters. Taj Brar recorded two outs, giving up three runs on two hits. Blake Wentz threw one inning and allowed one hit, while Dylan Alanis recorded his fifth win of the year after delivering two solid innings of relief.

"Talbott was great for his start, Brar came in and minimized, Wentz had a big relief outing and then Alanis kept us in it."

After three innings of scoreless baseball, HPU hopped on the board first, scoring three runs in the fourth. The Eagles answered in the bottom half of the fifth, tying things up at three. Whitman recorded his first RBI hit of the day scoring Caruso from second. Knapp drove in Jonny Tewinkle on an RBI double to right center, before Whippo scored Whitman on an RBI groundout.

Biola tacked on four in the sixth via a Caruso RBI single and Whitman three-run home run to left field.

The Sharks responded with three in the seventh and one in the eighth to tie it at 7-7.

Alanis pitched around a one-out double in the ninth, setting the stage for Biola to walk it off. On a 2-2 pitch, Whitman lined a 440ft home run over the left field wall, sealing the win for the Eagles. Whitman sits just two home runs shy of Biola's all-time record.

With the win, Biola improves to 18-19 overall and 14-15 in conference. They will host HPU tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
