Magallan Masterclass

Bottom of the order bats lift Biola past Chaminade, 4-2, to complete Friday sweep

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team swept the day against the Chaminade Silverswords on Friday. The Eagles won 4-2 after a brilliant outing by Gabe Magallan.

Magallan dealt his best outing of the season. He tossed six innings of five hit baseball, allowing two runs and two walks, while striking out six. Blake Wentz recorded the save, throwing an 11 pitch, three up, three down inning.

The offense for Biola came from the bottom third of the order. Reef Danner, Josh McAninch and Kevin Villegas combined for the four runs batted in. Danner went 3-for-3 with a stolen base, McAninch went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Villegas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Chaminade plated the first run on the ballgame in the top of the first. A 1-out RBI single gave the Silverswords the lead.

In the second inning, Danner reached via a lead off single, advancing to second on an error. Villegas drove in Danner after lining a base hit to left field. CUH responded in the third with a run of their own, retaking the lead, 2-1.

In a deja vu moment for Biola, Danner led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to right center. After stealing second base, Danner crossed home on a Villegas double to left center.

In the fifth, the Eagles put themselves in a position to take the lead. James Whitman reached on a leadoff single, Oscar Knapp walked, and Danner capitalized with an RBI single to left, scoring Whitman. McAninch followed with his own RBI hit to left. Biola took a 4-2 lead, needing six outs to close out the day.

Magallan struck out the side in the sixth and Wentz retired the Silverswords in order as the Eagles won, 4-2.

They will host the final two games tomorrow, April 18 with first pitch set at 12 p.m.
