Middle Innings Swing

Whitman leads Biola’s offense with a record-tying home run, but Chaminade’s middle-inning surge proves decisive

LA MIRADA --- The Biola baseball team took on the visiting Chaminade Silverswords for game three of four. After a first inning lead, the Eagles fell 9-5.

Luke Caruso, James Whitman and Reef Danner led Biola offensively, combining for nine hits and two RBIs.

In the first, CUH hopped on the board first after an RBI base hit. BU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jonny Tewinkle lined a base hit up the middle before Whitman roped a RBI triple down the left field line. Oscar Knapp scored Whitman with an RBI groundout.

Chaminade continued their offensive success through the following four innings. The Silverswords scored once in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth.

The Eagles answered in the bottom half of the fifth via a wild pitch. The bullpen for Biola kept Chaminade off the board the remaining four innings.

In the eighth, Kyle Rogers and Danner hit back-to-back singles and Ty Cowley drew a walk to load the bases. Josh McAninch lifted a fly ball to right field, scoring Rogers.

In the ninth, Whitman launched his 45th career home run, tying Carl Galloway for the all-time record.

Luke Ballantyne started for Biola. He tossed four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and struck out one. Nathan Hernandez entered, walked two and allowed three runs. Noe Novella tossed three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out four. Reagan Samples threw the final two frames, allowing no runs on two hits, a walk and one strikeout.

The Eagles move to 20-23 overall and 16-19 in conference. They will play CUH for the final game of the series, scheduled for 3 p.m.
