Eagles Take Series Finale in Extras

Complete team effort powers Biola in back-and-forth contest

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola baseball team closed out a four game set against the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles on Saturday evening. The Eagles won, 9-7 in eight innings.

Jonny Tewinkle 3-for-5 with an RBI. Oscar Knapp went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Nick Madole had two hits and two RBIs while Luke Caruso had an RBI hit, going 1-for-4.

CUI got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning before Biola responded with a run of their own in the top of the second. After a fielder's choice, a single, and an error, Tommy Kendlinger scored the first run for BU.

In the third, Biola tacked on two more thanks to a two-RBI single off the bat of Knapp. Tewinkle reached on a one out single before James Whitman drove a double into the gap in left center. CUI responded with a two-run home run and an RBI groundout to retake the lead, 4-3. 

In the fourth, Kevin Villegas drew a two-out walk, stole second and reached third on a throwing error. With a runner in scoring position, Caruso lined an RBI double to left field. Tewinkle followed the double with an RBI base hit to score Caruso from second.

In the fifth, Cole Thomson and Madole reached via a single and hit by pitch. On a double steal, Thomson scored from second while Madole moved to third, after a throwing error. The Golden Eagles responded, scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Knapp hit a lead off single back up the middle. Reef Danner pinch ran for Knapp and stole second base. After retiring the next two hitters, Madole lined an RBI single to left field on the first pitch. CUI tied it in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

The Eagles were quick to take the lead back after Caruso, Tewinkle and Whitman loaded the bases. Ty Cowley drove in Caruso via a sacrifice fly. Thomson was intentionally walked and Madole drew a four pitch walk to score Tewinkle.

Jacob Talbott got the start for BU. Talbott threw two and two-thirds, allowing four runs on five hits. Noe Novella threw only 11 pitches, recording four outs, including a seven pitch inning in the fourth. Wyatt Nichol pitched two innings of three hit baseball, allowing two runs. Dylan Alanis tossed the final two frames, giving up one run on three hits and two walks.

With the win, Biola improves to 14-14 overall and 10-10 in conference. They will travel to Rocklin, CA to take on the Jessup Warriors on March 19 at 1 p.m.
