Eagles Dominate in Conference Opener

Moreno scores four and Luna tallies 11 saves in Biola’s first conference victory of the season

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola women's water polo team opened WWPA play against the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles. A dominant second half secured the win for BU, 13-6.

"Tonight was a complete team win," stated Head coach Sarah Ramirez. "A 13-6 result over a respected conference opponent like Concordia is something we don't take lightly. We've walked through a lot of adversity this season, games where the outcome wasn't what we wanted, stretches where we had to look in the mirror and be honest about who we are and who we're becoming. But every one of those moments taught us perseverance."

Destino Moreno was the leading scorer for Biola, finding the back of the net four times. Gwendolyn Pidd, Alyah Ibarra, Ava LoBue, Myah Ibarra all scored twice, while Annabella Rapp tacked on one goal. Fernanda Luna was elite in goal for Biola, recording 11 saves and allowing only six goals. She tacked on two steals as well.

The first period was quiet offensively. Moreno put Biola on the board in the last minute of the first period, beating the keeper in the top left corner. Both teams secured a goal through one frame.

In the second period, BU found their offensive stride, scoring five goals through a combination of even strength and power-play goals. Moreno scored first, followed by Alyah Ibarra, Rapp, and Pidd (twice). Luna was hard to beat, recording two saves and one steal in the period.

The second half started quickly. CUI found the back of the net before Myah Ibarra scored her first goal of the night. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the third with three goals coming from Moreno and Alyah Ibarra

The final frame was all Biola, scoring three goals and conceding zero. LoBue snuck her first goal of the night past the keeper halfway through the period. Myah Ibarra scored just two minutes after and LoBue sealed the win in the final 21 seconds.

"I'm proud of the way this group has stayed together," continued Ramirez. "Adversity can divide a team, or it can define it. Our players chose to let it define us. This win is a reflection of the work they've put in behind the scenes, the resilience they've built, and the belief they've never let go of. And we're not done yet."

The Eagles secured their first conference win of the season and their second win overall.
