Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Eagles Battle Maize & Blue

Biola keeps pace early and rallies late in matchup with No. 12 Michigan.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — The long wait is finally over. Biola Women's Water Polo had the chance to compete at home for the first time in 2026, as the Eagles hosted the University of Michigan on Monday afternoon.

The No. 12 Wolverines scored a ton in the first period, and then controlled the middle portion of the contest to earn a 16-5 victory over the Eagles. Biola kept the game close through most of the first period, using back-to-back goals in the sixth minute to pull within two at 5-3.

However, the top-ranked Wolverines managed two late goals in that period to get to seven goals overall and be up by a four-spot at the period break.

Those two goals were the first of what would be nine consecutive unanswered scores for Michigan as Biola was scoreless in the second and third periods.

The Eagles once again managed back-to-back goals to open up the fourth quarter and begin to work their way back into the game a little bit. This time it was Gwendolyn Pidd scoring for the second time and Mia Mulhall adding one. After their contributions, the Eagles were back within single digits with almost six minutes to play.

Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the balance of that fourth quarter, though, with just two Michigan goals spread across the six minutes of action.

Biola was competitive throughout the match, earning some good offensive looks and finishing ahead of Michigan defenders on the counter a handful of times. However, the shots just were not falling with regularity. The Eagles hit the post and crossbar quite a bit and ran into a solid tandem in the cage for Michigan, which put up 11 saves.

Biola's goalies (Fernanda Luna and Clara McKee) combined for 14 saves in the contest. But, some sharpshooting for the Wolverines allowed them to convert on 43 percent of their shots in the contest.

The Wolverines were also locked in on the penalty kill, holding Biola to 1-for-7 when it had an extra player in this one.

Pidd led the Biola effort with two goals. Alyssa Cuevas, Mulhall and Alyah Ibarra also chipped one in for BU. Michigan had no real standout individual, with three different players scoring two goals to lead their effort.

Biola will look to bounce back from the loss with a solid showing at this weekend's Claremont Convergence tournament. Biola will begin the 4-game weekend with a tilt vs. Marist at 11:30 a.m. at Cal State Fullerton.
