Heartbreak at PacWest Tournament

It looked great until it did not, as Biola fell in the PacWest Tournament Semifinals to a buzzer beating game-winner from Academy of Art.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Biola's PacWest Tournament was cut short on Friday night in dramatic fashion. The Eagles took on Academy of Art and battled for every second of the 40-minute matchup. The last second saw tragedy, as the third-seeded Urban Knights snuck away with a 67-66 win over the second-seeded Eagles to move onto the championship game.

Shooting woes held back the Eagles in the opening half. The team shot just 33.3 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from downtown, and 45.5 percent from the free throw line on the way to just 28 points.

Against that trend, Biola began the game in a good position, scoring the first seven points of the contest. The Eagles maintained a marginal lead through the majority of the first 17 minutes of the first half, leading 28-22 with three minutes to go.

The first half ended with a 10-0 run for the Urban Knights. Biola shooters missed six-straight shots going into the break, as ART U took a 32-28 lead at the halfway point.

The Eagle offense returned to form at the start of the second half. Biola scored on five-straight possessions and took a 41-40 lead six minutes into the half.

BU continued to push and was up by seven points again for its biggest lead of the half but ART U was not done. The two teams traded big buckets as the game transitioned to the later part of the night.

With the clock ticking under four minutes to go, ART U converted on an and-one three-point play to go up 58-56. Julien Franklin responded with a clean bankshot to tie the game at 58 on the next possession. Davian Brown gave the Eagles the lead with two free throws and then sank a three to give BU a 63-58 cushion.

A timeout for ART U set up the next possession, as the Urban Knights netted a triple to pull back within one possession. One free throw for each team kept the margin at two but ART U grabbed an offensive rebound and found a layup to knot the game at 64 with 30 seconds left.

Casey Cappo looked to take the game in Biola's last offensive possession, taking the ball to the rack. A strong pivot foot kept him in play and the senior made a short hook shot to put Biola up 66-64 with six ticks on the clock.

Six seconds proved to be too much time, as Academy of Art moved down the court and made the game-winning three at the buzzer.

Cappo paced the Eagles in points and rebounds, tallying 16 points and eight boards on Friday. Four total starters reached double figures in points, including Daniel Esparza with 15, Davian Brown with 13 and Erik Howlin with 10.

Esparza stepped up in the second half, recording all 20 minutes on the court and totaling 10 points on 50.0 percent shooting.

Biola will now await the NCAA DII Men's Basketball Selection Show to see if it will advance to regionals. The selection show is set for Sunday at 8:00 pm PT.
