A Team, Season to Remember

The 2024-25 Biola Men’s Basketball season was a special one that wrapped up on Friday night.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Grit and resilience brought the Biola team far in the 2024-25 season. The Eagles scored their second appearance at the NCAA DII West Regional Tournament but fell in the opening round on Friday night.

The 88-77 loss to No. 5 seed Cal State San Bernardino eliminated the fourth-seeded Eagles from the tourney, ending a historic season for the program. Biola wrapped the year with a 22-8 overall record, its best in its NCAA DII era.

"This was a very resilient team," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "I've coached a lot of teams at Biola and I've enjoyed all of them but there are a few that are really special teams that you look back on and this team is going to be one of them."

A trio of seniors paced the squad on the night, as Davian Brown tallied 24 points, Daniel Esparza grabbed 20 points and Casey Cappo landed 15 points. The three Eagles each completed their collegiate careers on Friday, cashing in over 4,000 career points combined.

"The relationships we've built, it's unlike any team I've ever been on," commented Casey Cappo. "I think a lot of that has to do with our relationship with Christ, bonding us and it's been a joy."

The first half was a tight-knit battle from start to finish. The Yotes held a marginal lead through a good portion of the half but Biola battled back with five minutes to go. The Eagles put together an 8-0 run over a three-minute stretch, behind a Chris Harris triple, a Brown layup and three free throws.

Through 20 minutes the two teams were locked together on the scoreboard at 37.

Coming out of the break, the focus was effort and the Biola squad got off to a nice start with a Casey Cappo three-pointer on the first possession. Unfortunately, that was the last points for the Eagles until the 14:24 mark. A scoreless five minute stretch opened the door for CSUSB to move ahead, 48-40.

CSUSB continued to push its lead throughout the second half. Biola sank a few triples before the final buzzer to pull within 11 as time expired.

Erik Howlin did well distributing the ball, leading the team with four assists to go along with nine points.

The Eagles will graduate five including Brown, Cappo, Esparza, Hunter Ruck, and Julien Franklin.
