Winning Ways Continue

Biola Men’s Basketball got the job done up in northern California, defeating Dominican a second time this season.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Biola (18-6, 12-4 PacWest) remained unbeaten in the last three weeks, taking down the opponent they began the winning streak with, Dominican (9-14, 4-11 PacWest). The team's seventh-straight win came on the road on Saturday afternoon in a 72-65 fashion at Dominican.

Guard play won the day with the points pouring in from Davian Brown, Daniel Esparza and Erik Howlin. The trio logged 57 of the team's 72 points. Howlin thrived with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Daniel Esparza was the offense in the early going. The senior recorded 11 of the team's first 13 points of the game, as the Eagles opened a 13-10 advantage.

A three-minute drought for both offenses followed with the teams combining for nine missed field goals and four turnovers.

Biola pushed its lead forward in the first half, reaching as high as seven points but DUC battled back. The host squad found its stroke and moved ahead at 25-24 with 4:38 remaining in the first half.

The Eagles immediately responded with an 11-2 run to regain control. Four different Eagles scored with four made field goals and three made free throws in the rally without a miss. At the halftime break, BU held the edge, 36-32.

Big swings opened up the second half, as Dominican scored the first seven points out of the break. It did not take long for BU to answer, going on a 9-0 run for themselves to rebuild their lead.

BU hit its top lead at 10 points but the Penguins stuck around and chipped away. With the clock ticking under four minutes to go, Dominican moved to within one possession at 64-61.

The two teams traded buckets as the game drew on and it was Davian Brown to grab the crucial shot. At 67-65, Brown knocked down the triple as the shot clock expired to put BU back up by five with two minutes left. Esparza added a pair of free throws to ice the game for the 72-65 finish.

Brown paced the squad on Saturday with 21 points on 6-12 shooting from the field and 7-9 shooting from the charity stripe. Esparza came next with 20 points, converting at a 63.6 percent clip from the planks.

Biola will be back in action on the road at Concordia on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
