Nearly Pulled it Off

Biola and Point Loma were caught in a classic conference clash on Thursday but it was the Sea Lions who escaped with the win.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (11-6, 5-4 PacWest) welcomed Point Loma (15-4, 8-1 PacWest) to La Mirada on Thursday night and challenged them from start to finish. Neither team led by more than seven points but a final push from the visiting Sea Lions made the difference in a 76-70 final.

There was not much separation between the two teams throughout the evening contest. Each team held an edge on the scoreboard for over 15 minutes of gametime. The lead changed hands five times to go along with 10 ties.

Daniel Esparza played his part in the Biola attack, piling on 24 points on Thursday. He led the Eagles in the scoring column, tacking on a season-best 24 points with eight field goals and five free throws.

The Eagles thrived at the free throw line with the two teams combining for 42 fouls. BU knocked down 17 foul shots on 19 attempts for a 89.5 free throw percentage.

Biola struck first on Thursday, holding the edge through most of the first half. Through the first 15 minutes of the contest, BU shot over 50.0 percent from the floor and held a 28-22 lead.

PLNU flipped the script though, ending the half on a 14-4 run. The visitors took control with a 36-32 edge at the break.

After pushing their lead early in the second half, PLNU went quiet for two and a half minutes. The Eagles took advantage of an 0-5 stretch from the visitors and went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead. The charity stripe provided a jolt with seven free throws in the stretch.

Biola maintained the lead as the game transitioned to the final five minutes but never gained significant separation. PLNU knotted the game at 5:39 and the back and forth ensued. A 6-0 rally for PLNU swung the game in its favor with the clock ticking below two minutes.

Davian Brown completed an electric three-point play to bring Biola within two points at 68-66 with 1:27 left. Point Loma responded by sandwiching a layup and two free throws around a BU turnover, grabbing a six-point edge with 30 ticks left, leading to the 76-70 final.

Erik Howlin was impressive off the bench, scoring 17 points by getting to the rim. The junior converted at a 60.0 percent clip from the floor and was a perfect four-for-four at the line.

Biola struggled from three-point land on Thursday, hitting just five triples on 20 attempts.

The Eagles will look to get back on track on Saturday, hosting Dominican at 3:00 pm.
