Cappo Goes for 30 in Road Victory

Biola picked up a huge win in Hawaii, taking down the Silverswords in overtime on Thursday night.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Eagles walked the tightrope on Thursday and found success at Chaminade. Casey Cappo guided the Biola men's basketball team to a 88-81 overtime victory with a career performance on the road.

30 points was just the start for Cappo, who put the Eagles into overtime with clutch free throws.

With the final minute underway, Chaminade landed a crucial shot with a three-pointer to take a one-point lead. A CUH free throw made for a two-point edge with 25 seconds on the clock.

The final possession for the Eagles was in the hands of Cappo, who drew contact on the way to the rim. Following a break in action for a review and a timeout, the veteran delivered on the pair of foul shots to knot the game at 79 and force OT.

CUH made it to the charity stripe on the opening possession of overtime to take an 81-79 but that would be the final points for the host squad.

Biola ended the game on a 9-0 run in overtime. Julien Franklin scored the game-tying bucket with a putback layup and Erik Howlin put the team ahead with a free throw.

Cappo thrived on the night and offered his best showing in the scoring column. He set a new career-best mark, hitting 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field in addition to 10 made free throws.

The senior also secured his biggest double-double with 14 rebounds. Cappo entered Thursday only surpassing 14 boards once before, doing so in the 2023-24 campaign.

Chaminade struck first in the first half, opening a 10-point lead in the early going. A hot shooting streak helped the hosting team to a 13-0 run with just over five minutes elapsed in the contest.

The Eagles chipped away with good team play on both ends of the floor. Over the next nine minutes, a trio of Eagles netted seven points, as the BU squad jumped ahead behind a 25-4 stretch. In the run, Biola held CUH to 2-14 shooting and four turnovers.

BU capped off the first half, leading 41-34, thanks to 13 points from Casey Cappo. The senior was huge in the opening half with 13 points and six rebounds in 14 minutes on the court.

Turnovers began to cripple the Eagles in the second half, as the Silverswords worked back into the lead. BU coughed up the ball 11 times, leading to 16 points.

A 9-0 run for Chaminade flipped the game in its favor, as CUH led for 12 minutes of the second half. The Eagles finally tied the game with two minutes left, before putting together the clutch plays for the win.

Franklin and Howlin made a huge impact off the bench, tacking on 15 points apiece. Franklin neared a double-double with nine rebounds and tallied an efficient night with five makes on seven attempts from the field and a perfect four makes at the line.

Daniel Esparza and Davian Brown also hit double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Biola will now hop over to The Big Island and face Hawaii Hilo on Saturday at 9:30 pm PT.
