Eagles Come Up Short at Hawaii Hilo

A second half deficit proved too much, as Biola could not pull ahead late.

HILO, Hawaii --- Saturday saw the conclusion of Biola men's basketball's Hawaii road trip, as the Eagles (11-5, 5-3 PacWest) battled the Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo (10-6, 3-3 PacWest). The two teams traded blows but it was UHH that came out on top, 87-82.

Casey Cappo picked up where he left off on Thursday, starting the night hot on offense. Through the first six minutes of the bout, the senior tacked on 11 of the team's initial 16 points. He hit five of his first six shots, as the Eagles jumped out to an early lead.

A 19-11 lead for Biola did not last though, as the Vulcans rallied. Hawaii Hilo found its stroke and pulled ahead behind a 64.0 percent shooting clip in the first half for a 40-35 lead at the halftime break.

The Vulcans did not let the break impede their offensive momentum. The first five possessions of the second half resulted in points for UHH, as the host squad built a 14-point advantage.

The UHH lead never raised above 14 but never fell below seven until the final minute of the game.

The Eagles pushed back in the closing minutes with an offensive onslaught. In a crazed effort to erase an 11-point deficit, the team netted 20 points in the final 3:24 of the game. BU offered eight makes on 10 attempts, including a pair of triples, bridging the game within two possessions with under a minute to go.

The flurry of buckets brought Biola a four-point play away from tying UHH but the time ran out and the comeback attempt fell short.

Cappo ended the game with 20 points to lead the team, shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Daniel Esparza was not far behind with 17 points, while also collecting a team-high seven rebounds.

The free throws came in great volume for the Eagles, who totaled 22 makes from the charity stripe.

Biola will head home for its next contest, facing Point Loma on Thursday at 7:30 pm inside Chase Gymnasium.
