No. 12 PLNU Slips Past Eagles

Biola came out swinging in the opening 20 minutes but were unable to hold on at Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- BU men's basketball took on top competition on Wednesday. A strong first half did not translate though, as the Eagles (8-2, 2-1 PacWest) fell to No. 12 Point Loma (10-2, 3-0 PacWest), 82-67.

The BU offense delivered in the early going with 13 field goals, and three triples on 50.0 percent shooting beyond the arc.

Their first lead came behind an 11-0 run in a three minute stretch. The Eagles shot out of a cannon and hit five-straight field goals, while holding PLNU scoreless for a 17-11 BU lead. Biola continued to push its early advantage, reaching a 13-point edge in the first half.

The Sea Lions began their climb back before the halftime break, cutting into the BU lead. The momentum stayed with the host squad, who completed a 26-6 run between the final four minutes of the first half and first five minutes of the second.

A 19-2 run blew the game open for PLNU. Biola netted the final seven points of the game but it was not enough.

Davian Brown paced the squad on Wednesday, scoring 14 points with four makes and two treys. Erik Howlin was not far behind with 12 points, while shooting an efficient 71.4 percent from the floor.

Daniel Esparza also hit double figures with 10 points on Wednesday. The senior wrapped up the day 11 points shy of the 1,000 career points milestone.

Esparza will have the chance to hit the milestone on Saturday at Vanguard at 6:00 pm.
