Victory Secured

The Eagles delivered in the clutch on Saturday, taking down Vanguard on the road.

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Free throws down the stretch meant the difference for Biola (9-2, 3-1 PacWest), as the squad defeated Vanguard (6-2, 1-2 PacWest). The Saturday evening matchup was neck-and-neck throughout but it was the visiting Eagles who captured the 74-71 win.

BU made a home at the charity stripe in the second half. The Eagles had the Vanguard defense in shambles, going from just two free throws in the first half to 27 in the second half. 22 of the team's 43 points came at the line, including 12 of their final 14 points.

An even game state was flipped when Biola put together a 13-3 run with seven minutes to go. Nine free throws and a pair of layups pushed the Eagles forward, while forcing four misses from the Lions.

Davian Brown paced the team at the line, sinking eight of eight foul shots. He finished the night with 16 points and nabbed three steals.

The Eagles overcame a tough shooting night from range, hitting just three triples on 16 attempts.

Working near the hoop, the BU squad thrived with 40 points in the paint compared to just 28 from the Lions.

Erik Howlin was the leader of the five Eagle starters with double-digit points. The senior collected 19 points, shooting seven-for-nine from the floor with four free throws. Casey Cappo posted 10 points and landed 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.

The Eagles will return to action with a non-conference matchup on Friday, facing Northwest Nazarene at home at 2:00 pm.
