Off to a Flying Start

Biola came out of the gates in a hurry on Friday and pulled through for its season opening win.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- The Eagles looked to be in midseason form to begin the 2024-25 campaign on Friday afternoon. Everything went the way of Biola in the early going and the BU squad would hold on for the win late in a 65-57 victory over CSU San Marcos.

The new season saw four new faces dawn the Eagles jersey but the team did not seem to skip a beat. A starting lineup of four veterans set the tone at the beginning of Friday's game that would set up the win.

A 17-4 start for the BU squad was just the way the team wanted to begin the season, utilizing efficient shooting and stout defense to score the advantage. A 12-0 run keyed the big lead, as the Eagles scored on five-consecutive trips down the court with a different player scoring each time.

Efficient shooting was prevalent throughout the first half with Biola converting at a rate of 55.6 from the field. The team was also great from long range, hitting eight threes at a 53.3 percent clip.

On the defensive end, BU held the Cougars down, forcing nine turnovers and keeping them under 40.0 shooting from the floor.

Biola maxed its lead at 20 in the first half, while never trailing through the entirety of the game.

CSUSM battled back in the second half, chipping away at the Biola edge. A 12 point lead for BU was nearly vanquished, as the hosting Cougars pulled within three at 49-46 with nine minutes to go.

Davian Brown stepped up in the final minutes, scoring 10 of the team's last 16 points to end the game. Four free throws from Brown sealed the game at 65-57.

The attack was balanced for BU, as seven different Eagles netted at least six points. Brown was the leader in the clubhouse in his first appearance with the Eagles, scoring 15 points. Julien Franklin also made his debut for BU, reaching 11 points.

Daniel Esparza hit double digits in the scoring column as well, with 10 points on Friday. The senior also added six rebounds to lead the team.

Erik Howlin returned to the court for the Eagles and was a well-rounded contributor with seven points, six assists, and five boards.

BU is back at home for its next bout, facing Cal State LA on Saturday at 7:30 pm inside Chase Gymnasium.
