Eagles Hold On at Home

Biola maintained control throughout Saturday’s contest but staved off a late rally from CSULA for the victory.

LA MIRADA --- Chase Gymnasium was rocking for Biola's home opener on Saturday evening. Biola (2-0) treated the home crowd to a nice 83-71 win over Cal State LA (0-2), despite a feverish comeback attempt by the visitors.

In consecutive games, the Eagles got off to a hot start, opening up big leads early. On Saturday, the treys were falling, leading to a 12-2 advantage in just three minutes of action. The first five possessions resulted in four threes for the host squad and the hot shooting did not stop there.

Throughout the first half, Biola maintained a consistent double-digit lead, peaking at 15 three times. Four Eagles made a triple in the first half, as Davian Brown, Nathan Medina, and Casey Cappo all reached double-digit points before the break.

Daniel Esparza commented on the hot shooting after the game, "That comes with how much we trust each other. A lot of what we are getting are good looks."

The halftime break did not slow down the Eagles, who quickly pushed their advantage above 20 points. Brown extended Biola's lead to its apex with nine minutes to go in the contest at 24 points.

CSULA quickly regained composure and bounced back with eight-straight points. The visitors continued to chip away, forcing BU turnovers and creating easy buckets. The lead dropped all the way down to nine points with 49 seconds on the clock but two key defensive stops and three free throws iced the game for BU.

Esparza carried the Eagles in the second half, netting all 15 of his points in the second 20 minutes of the game. The guard also added nine rebounds in the contest, which only trailed Casey Cappo who tallied a double-double with 21 points and 11 boards. Cappo led the team in both points and rebounds, while scoring efficiently with a 64.3 field goal percentage.

"As a senior and leader on this team I'm just trying to do whatever it takes to win. All glory to God!" added Esparza.

The main distributor of the basketball was Erik Howlin with seven assists on Saturday.

Biola essentially had the lead for the entirety of the game, going 39:43 of game time with an edge.

The Eagles will be back in action at home once again on Thursday, battling CSU San Bernardino at 7:30 pm.
