Met At Every Turn

Biola Baseball was unable to grab another road win on Sunday despite some late scoring.

SAN DIEGO --- The Biola Eagles returned to Point Loma on Sunday to complete the second half of its four-game conference series with the No. 17-ranked Sea Lions.

Head Coach Justin Duarte's group produced late run-scoring efforts in both games and was two outs away from taking a series split with a win in the final game of the set. But Point Loma had a big eighth inning in game one and followed that up with a walkoff homerun in game two to drop Biola to 6-6 in PacWest play.

The final scores of both games don't do any justice to how close Biola played the Sea Lions in both contests. After falling behind early in game one, Jerron Largusa came up with two outs in the fourth and hit a 1-0 fastball over the wall to make it a one run game.

It was Largusa's third homerun on the year and his first of two big extra-base hits in the series for the senior outfielder. But Point Loma started a trend of responding to the Eagles' success with three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the fourth to replace the cushion on their lead.

A few innings later, Biola got back within striking distance by scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. But the Eagles were unable to produce any additional hits after those respective runs scored. Point Loma got out of both innings without any additional harm and hit two homeruns in the bottom of the eighth to blow the game open and set the table for its 11-3 win in game one.

The Sea Lions opened up the scoring with another homerun coming from their first batter of game two. But Dallas Burk and his teammates shook that off very quickly and settled into a very close contest. The senior lefty delivered a great start in the final game of the series for the second week in a row by shuting out the home team over the first five innings while the Eagles took the lead.

After Kyle Gracey led off the game with a solo homerun, Burk prevented the Sea Lions from advancing beyond second until the sixth inning and retired PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, Micah Pries, all three times he faced Pries.

While Burk mowed through the Sea Lions' order, the Eagles tied the score with back-to-back two-out singles in the second that allowed Ryan Gallegos to score on a Connor Kostecka bouncer up the middle. Then Jackson Collins cemented his title of Sea Lion threat with a solo homerun in the fifth that gave Biola its first lead of the day.

Collins homer to lead off the fifth came on a 3-1 fastball and was his second of the series, the first coming in a 1-1 game on Friday that became a 6-1 win for Biola. The Watsonville, California native raised his batting average by 100 points after appearing in just two games during the series. He went 5-for-6 against Point Loma with three RBI's and two runs scored on those two homeruns.

RJ Bates followed Collins' suit in the sixth inning with a solo shot in the sixth that put Biola up 3-1 before Point Loma surged back against and tied the game with a two-run single after Burk had already recorded two outs in the inning.

Despite losing the lead, the Eagles got right back to work with Anthony Villegas getting out of the jam with runners at the corners and the top of the order coming up in the seventh. Biola delievered with two outs again as RobertAnthony Cruz and Largusa smashed back-to-back doubles that took the lead back for the visitors.

It was a huge running scoring hit for Largusa, who continues to deliver in clutch situations for the Eagles and finishes the series with a team-leading 21 RBI's and 28 hits on the season. The double was Largusa's first hit of the game, perpetuating his hitting streak through all 12 of Biola's PacWest games. He's now halfway to Randy Brouwer's record of a 24-game hitting streak set in 1982.

Unfortunately, the Sea Lions reversed the Eagles' momentum against with a walkoff homerun with one out in the bottom half of the seventh inning to win the contest, 7-4.

Biola will take a break from conference play next week and will head to Escondido, California on Friday to take on Saint Katherine. Both teams will then return to Eagles Diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader.
