Home Sweet Home

Biola returned home to play winning baseball with a carousel of scoring and great pitching against Saint Katherine.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles looked very comfortable on Friday in their return home after a tough conclusion to their series at Point Loma. Starting pitcher Troy Stainbrook was dominant over four innings for the win while the offense scored in every inning between the second and sixth and collected seven extra-base hits in the 13-0 victory over Saint Katherine.

The teams agreed before Friday's contest to play by a 10-run rule after seven innings to allow Saint Katherine the opportunity to bus home at a decent time if the game was decided early. And with Biola's hitters pounding out 13 runs, Stainbrook got rewarded for his stellar success in limited work. The senior left-hander struck out the side in two of his four innings and recorded eight of his final nine outs via the K.

That amounted to nine strikeouts for Stainbrook while he induced 18 empty swings from Saint Katherine hitters in four innings. He allowed just one hit over that same span to earn his second win of the year and lower his ERA to a team-best 2.54.

Stainbrook's counterpart Kyle Huett also retired the side in order in his first inning of work but got into trouble in the second with free passes and then ran into the wall that has been Jackson Collins over the past week-plus. With two on and no outs in the second, Collins lowered the boom on a fastball out over the plate and pulled a light-tower homerun to right-center to leave the yard in his third-straight game.

After Collins' homerun staked Stainbrook to a 3-0 lead and made Collins the sixth Eagle to drive in 10 runs this year, Biola added another run in the second and smashed at least one extra-base hit in each of the next three innings to break the game open.

Joey Magro and Jerron Largusa both hit run-scoring doubles, with Magro's coming in the third and Largusa grabbing a total of three RBI's on Friday with doubles in the fourth and fifth innings. Those hits push Margo's slugging percentage up to .400 while Largusa now has a 13-game hitting streak and a team-best 30 hits on the year.

Around the hits that did big damage, the Eagles also put Firebird pitchers through the wringer by working counts to earn a ton of free passes. Led by Cole Beemer's three walks on the way to Beemer scoring three times, Biola earned 10 walks and was hit by four pitches on its way to scoring more than 10 runs for the fifth time this season.

The big lead also allowed Tyler Baca, Thomas Elms and Michael Fritchman to all make appearances at the plate as Head Coach Justin Duarte worked the rest of his roster in beginning in the fourth inning. Baca and Fritchman both reached safely while Fritchman scored the 12th run of the game on a balk in the sixth.

Saint Katherine will return to Eagles Diamond for a doubleheader on Saturday to complete the three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 noon.
