The Bright Side of 11

Biola Baseball took its turn as the offense that scored 11 runs, defeating Vanguard 11-5 on the road.

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- You can chalk the first two games of Biola's 2019 season to the "Baseball is weird" category after the Eagles rebounded from an 11-0 loss to Hope International with an 11-5 win at Vanguard on Tuesday.

Much of the circumstances surrounding Tuesday's game with the Lions lined straight up with Biola's first game with HIU. The Eagles were taking on an old GSAC conference peer that was off to a hot start, Vanguard was 8-0 coming into the game and had defeated NAIA No. 7 Antelope Valley on Monday. And Head Coach Justin Duarte fielded a largely identical lineup to the one he used in the season opener.

But at some point in the past week, the Eagles must have made their peace with the number 11 and gotten on its good side to even Biola's record at 1-1 heading into this weekend's series with San Diego Christian.

The Eagles started the game by putting any anxieties about the offense to bed with a quick two runs to start the contest. Jerron Largusa sent a hot shot to the Vanguard first baseman that was then airmailed into the outfield so Joey Magro and Connor Kostecka could score.

Vanguard struck back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and simply ran into starter Chris Despars on an off day for the junior. But Anthony Villegas more than took care of business in relief of Despars to put the brakes on the Lions offense while Biola climbed back into the game.

Villegas turned in a stellar 4.2 innings of relief during which he only allowed two hits and one run. He also struck out three on the way to his first win of the year.

Villegas' teammates had already turned the game around for him by the time he exited after the fifth inning. Duarte's group scored six runs in the fourth inning, four of which came in on a Kostecka two-run single and a two-run bomb from Ryan Gallegos, to take an 8-4 lead that would only get bigger in the ninth inning.

After Dallas Burk, Josh Ludeman and Troy Stainbrook piloted the Eagles' defense to the ninth inning, the bats added three more runs on an RBI knock from RobertAnthony Cruz and a two-run single from Cole Beemer. Stainbrook closed up shop by striking out the side in the ninth and sealing a non-conference win against Vanguard for the second-straight year.

The Eagles defeated the Lions 16-5 at home in 2018.

Biola is currently scheduled to host San Diego Christian for the start of a three-game series on Friday at 2 p.m.
