Eagles Halt Hawks’ Momentum

Biola Baseball eliminates a 4-0 deficit and scores nine runs in a three-inning span to defeat San Diego Christian.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles will still be hoping to better starts to their games headed into next week. But they sure are pretty good at playing comeback baseball and controlling the middle innings in their past two wins.

Biola trailed the San Diego Christian Hawks 4-0 after four innings and had just one hit over that span. But the start of the bottom of the fifth sparked a nine-run outburst over the next three innings for Biola while Head Coach Justin Duarte's relievers put the brakes on the Hawks' offense to secure their second-straight win by a score of 9-5.

The game began to turn in the home team's favor in the fourth inning, when sophomore Honus Kindreich retired the Hawks in order and kept the score at 4-0. Kindirech allowed just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and stopped SDCC in its tracks by retiring seven men in a row to conclude his outing.

By the time Troy Stainbrook took over for Kindreich in the top of the sixth, the Eagles had closed the gap to one run thanks to three RBI hits from the top half of the order. The three men who contributed those hits, RobertAnthony Cruz, Ryan Gallegos and Joey Magro, combined for seven RBI's on Saturday by the time the seventh inning was over while the final three spots in the order collected seven free passes and scored six runs.

Biola drew eight free passes and had eight hits after Hawks' starter Leo Soto left the game after three innings.

After Stainbrook made it 10-consecutive Hawk outs with a clean sixth, the Eagles took the lead for good in the bottom half with contributions from all nine hitters. Magro and Cruz both had produtive outs that scored runs, and Magro's sac fly with the bases loaded tied the game at 4-4. Then Ryan Gallegos came up with the big hit to make it 6-4 when his line drive glanced off the third baseman's glove and trickled into left field as Brandony Cody and Michael Fritchman both scored.

Connor Kostecka continued his hot start to the season by delivering a two-run knock in the seventh that provided Biola breathing room with a score of 9-4. That set the floor for Stainbrook to continue to attack the zone and record five strikeouts over three innings of work while allowing just one unearned run. The senior lefty picked up his first win of the year for his effort and evened his record at 1-1.

The Hawks and Eagles hope to return to Biola for a second game on Monday at 2 p.m. Heavy rain is forecasted to hit La Mirada on Sunday and may affect Monday's schedule, so check athletics.biola.edu on Monday morning for updates on the game.
