OLYMPIA, Wash. --- As Biola Track & Field continues to improve its sprints and jumps programs the Eagles add another versatile student-athlete in Heidi Sowers.
Â
Sowers was a three-sport athlete at Northwest Christian High School where she ran four years of varsity track, player four years of varsity basketball and three years of varsity volleyball for the Navigators.
Â
She was the track team's MVP in 2015-16 and won the 2016 state championship in the 300m hurdles.
Â
"Heidi truly represents what we are looking for in a student-athlete," said Head Coach
Sean Henning. "She comes from a great family where faith was at the center of her upbringing. She wants to be in an environment where she can thrive as a Christian student-athlete, and in that order. She is a competitor who wants to be great. I'm excited to begin working with her and watching her develop as an athlete. Look for big things from Heidi Sowers."
Â
With a state championship under her belt Sowers is used to "big things." She is exactly the type of student-athlete the Eagles are looking for as the team moves into the NCAA Division II era.
Â
In addition to her athletic accolades Sowers is quite the student. She was class valedictorian, president of the National Honor Society and finished high school with a 4.0 grade point average.
Â
"[I chose Biola because of] the strong emphasis the school puts on following Christ, the amazing track program and coaches, and the nursing program," said Sowers.
Â
Both of her sisters were also collegiate athletes. They chose to stay up in the Pacific Northwest to compete at Seattle Pacific and Northwest (Wash.).
Â
Sowers will major in nursing and focus on the 100m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, 200m and 4x400m relay. She begins classes at Biola this fall.
