Eagles Homer Their Way To Series Win

Biola wins a series against Westmont for the first time since 2014.

Daniel Jang earned his 10th save of the season. First Eagle with double-digit saves since 2011.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- By taking the the final game of the weekend series with Westmont 6-3, RV Biola demonstrated its mastery of the comeback victory. The Eagles have won seven- consecutive series in Golden State Athletic Conference play and have gone more than seven weeks without losing two games in a row.

Westmont took the first game Saturday 12-4 with an unrelenting offense in the middle innings and is 25-19 (11-14 GSAC) after the weekend series. Biola currently stands a game out of first place with a 17-10 conference record and 32 wins overall.

The fifth inning was the crux of game one on Saturday. The Warriors had a slim 2-1 lead after four innings and was able to five runs on three hits against Micah Beyer to seize a commanding 7-1 advantage. Westmont sent nine men to the plate in the inning and the seventh batter, Derek Rodigo, landed the big blow with a two-run triple that made it a 6-1 score.

Warriors starter David Gaydos allowed one run in the bottom of the frame on a Ricky Perez sacrifice fly, but otherwise escaped a big-time jam with the bases loaded and nobody out. Gaydos went five innings to get the win, snapping his persona streak of four-consecutive starts against GSAC opponents without getting a W.

Rawley Hughes briefly tied the score at 1-1 with a solo homerun in the second and Jeremy Barth got two of his three RBI's on Saturday with a single in the eighth that scored Chris Palmer and Anj Bourgeois. Westmont added one more in the ninth to make it 12-4 before Grant Gardner finished things off in the ninth to earn a save.

Wyatt Haccou opened the second game of the doubleheader with two key scoreless innings to cool off the Warriors offense and afford Biola enough time to build a 2-0 advantage.

A double steal involving Sam Thorne and Joey Magro allowed the Eagles to scratch together their first run in the bottom of the first and a knock from Colton Worthington in the bottom of the second against reliever Toby Dunlap scored Perez to make it 2-0. Thorne is now 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts this season, while Worthington's single gave him 10 RBI's on the week.

Westmont came back for two in the third against Haccou on a two-run single from Derek Rodigo but the Eagles pitcher kept things under control thereafter. Haccou went six innings without allowing a walk for his seven win of the season. He struckout two, induced 11 groundouts and retired the last six batters he saw after surrendering his third run of the game in the fifth.

By that point Biola had already scored six runs thanks to the muscle of Barth and Bourgeois. Barth led off the third inning with his second homerun of the year on a Dunlap fastball to regain the lead for the Eagles, 3-2. Then Bourgeois left the yard for the first time this season to straight-away center after a Perez RBI single to make it 6-2.

Perez was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game Saturday with a double and two runs scored to go with his slick fielding at short.

Daniel Jang recorded his tenth save of the year after facing four batters in the ninth. He threw 13 pitches to induce three flyouts and become the sixth pitcher across the NAIA to record 10 saves this season.

Biola returns to Eagles Diamond for a pivotal three-game series with RV Vanguard next week. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
