17 Going on 30

Eagles win their third in row with another offensive explosion.

Chris Palmer went 3-for-6 with three runs scored as the starting second baseman.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- RV Biola busted out the dynamite in the fourth inning of Tuesday with an 11-run frame that helped them pull away from the Bethesda Flames and win their third-straight game. The 17-2 victory helped the Eagles become the first Golden State Athletic Conference team to win 30 games this season and brings them within one win of their total from 2016.

Buddy Brouwer gets his fourth win of the season for getting Biola through the first four innings of the game with only two runs allowed. After the second inning, the Flames were held scoreless for the next seven frames while Biola scored four in the third and 11 in the fourth on the way to 17 unanswered runs.

"It was good to see Buddy bounce back in the third and fourth to have smooth innings," said Chris Palmer, who was 3-for-6 with three runs scored on the day. "It really ended up being a quality start because he was able to shut the other team down while the offense created a 13-run lead."

Brouwer got four strikeouts and five groundouts over his four innings of work and deferred to four Eagle relievers who closed things out over the final five. Gabe Ihrig, James Goodwin and Jake Battaglia all recorded strikeouts during their outings while submariner Sean Mccarrel threw a 1-2-3 frame on six pitches in the sixth.

Although the Eagles were down 2-0 after two innings, it would not be long until the scoreboard literally could not contain their offensive output.

In the third, Joey Magro started the scoring opened the floodgates with an RBI knock that score Palmer. Two batters later Colton Worthington hit the first of his two homeruns on Tuesday to give Biola two more runs and their first lead. The two-run blast eventually spelled the end for Flames starter Daniel Arellano, who surrendered two more hits after the homer and was tagged with the loss.

"The last part of the season we've really been grinding as a team, and offensively we've learned to keep making pitchers work instead of pressing," said Worthington. "We believe that if we keep seeing pitches and working hard things will fall for us and that's what happened in the third for us to score four."

The home team's patience paid off in the fourth as eight hits led to 11 runs and a 14-2 lead. The Eagles sent 14 ment ot the plate and nine individual batters reached base safely. Worthington capped off the inning with a grand slam to left field that forced the scoreboard operator to revert back to a "1" in the runs scored column for the frame due to the board's inability to display an "11."

"When I had hit the grand slam I was really just thinking about not making two outs in one inning," said Worthington. "I was just looking to put something in play but I was able to turn on a fastball and get all of the pitch. It felt great."

Trey Holly got in the act a little later by hitting the first homerun of his season to deep right field in the eighth. Holly was one of six Eagles to have multi-hit games: Joey Magro, Jonas Wellan and Anj Bourgeois were the other hitters with multi-hit games who were not previously mentioned.

The Eagles will return to action this weekend when they welcome the Westmont Warriors to Eagles Diamond for a three-game series. First pitch on friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
