Unlucky Seventh for Biola

Buddy Brouwer has thrown nine consecutive scoreless innings for the Eagles.

Buddy Brouwer scattered three hits in his five-inning start on Tuesday.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After Buddy Brouwer delivered five scoreless innings, the Eagles were running ahead of the Morningside (Iowa) Mustangs round the turn to the final straightaway. But the Mustangs kicked for five runs with two outs in the seventh to win by a nose, 6-4.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first after Jonas Wellan led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double. Rawley Hughes and Ricky Perez followed Wellan with walks against Mustangs reliever Lucas Henning to load the bases and set the table for Phil Knapp. The outfielder's line drive to right advanced the Eagles station to station and brought Wellan home to give Brouwer a lead to work with at 1-0.

Joey Magro tacked on one more before the inning ended with a sacrifice fly to score Trey Holly and it seemed Biola was well on its was to a low scoring victory.

Brouwer was absolutely dealing in his first start as as Eagle. Through his five innings, Brouwer never allowed a Morningside (Iowa) runner past second base and never allowed the ball to leave the infield over his last two frames. Brouwer collected seven flyouts and eight groundouts to extend his scoreless innings streak to nine over his last two appearances.

It became a 3-0 game when Rawley Hughes led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his second homerun of the year on a light tower shot to left.

But the Mustangs found their spark plug with a two-out rally in the seventh to turn the contest on its head. The top half of the Morningside (Iowa) order saw the next six men reach base safely. Two walks and four hits made it a 5-3 game and left Brouwer without any impact on the final results.

Three more hits in the eighth increased the lead to three for the visiting team and would neutralize the run Biola would scratch together in response during the bottom half of the innings. Hughes got another extra-base hit with a two-out double and was replaced at the second base bag by Jeremy Barth when he doubled immediately after.

The senior catcher now has seven hits in Biola's last three days of action and the Eagles have elevated the team doubles total 41 through 22 games by hitting three more two-base knocks on Tuesday.

The reliever Henning gets the win for the 10-4 Mustangs while closer Jordan Barr gets his third save of the year after 1.1 innings of work.

Biola returns to action on Thursday when the Eagles take on the Menlo Oaks for the finale of a three-game series that began four weeks ago. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
