Eagles Bring The Lumber To Lancaster

Eight individual Eagles contributed RBI’s in the doubleheader split.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- Even Tuesday's long, early-morning bus ride to Lancaster was not enough to make the Eagles' bats drowsy. Biola's nine runs came up just short in game one against the Antelope Valley Pioneers, but they used the momentum to score three early runs in game two and ultimately win 6-2.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's squad (23-13) remains 10 games over .500 after the split. The last time the Eagles were 10 games over .500 at the end of March was the 2011 season, a year in which they qualified for the opening round of the NAIA World Series.

Game one of the doubleheader saw seven lead changes as the lineups traded blows back and forth. Six different Eagles had multi-hit games with Colton Worthington coming up with two clutch efforts to take the lead in the third and tie the game at eight in the sixth.

After Sam Thorne's two-run single tied it at two, Worthington did the job to make it 3-2 with an RBI groundout that scored shortstop Ricky Perez. Then Worthington smashed a triple in the sixth that plated Anj Bourgeois to make it 8-8 and set the table for a Jimmy Gallarda go-ahead single.

In between those two Worthington at-bats, Joey Magro pushed a run home with an RBI single, which was part of his 3-for-3 line in the game. Phil Knapp also had three hits in game one and collected two RBI with his single in the fifth.

Three doubles in the seventh for the Pioneers would wrestle the lead away from Biola for the final time. The Eagles pushed Antelope Valley the end by loading the bases with two outs in the ninth before a groundout ended the game at a 9-10 final score.

That late run gave Biola the implicit psychological edge in game two and allowed the Eagles to stake Buddy Brouwer to an early lead in the second inning. A Pioneer miscue on a Kalani Nakamura grounder and a double steal created two runs and put Nakamura in scoring position for a Bourgeois double.

Brouwer held onto a two-run lead after two innings and went a total of four with three strikeouts for his third victory of the year. Single runs for the Eagles in the fifth, sixth and seventh got the lead to a comfortable level while relievers Nick Swizek and Daniel Jang shutout the home team over the final three innings.

Jang had two punch outs over his two innings to register his seventh save of the season. He's fifth in the NAIA in that category this year.

Biola gets the weekend off before returning to action at Eagles Diamond next Tuesday against Marymount California. First pitch on April 4 is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
