Eagles’ Aerial Attack Sinks Mariners

Gabe Ihrig is 2-0 with 11-consecutive scoreless innings over the last seven days.

Anj Bourgeois went 1-for-2 with an RBI in Biola's 4-2 win.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Unselfish hitting carried the banner for the Eagles in their win over Marymount California on Tuesday. After Jerron Largusa jumped ship with his third homer of the season in the first inning, sacrifice flies from Anj Bourgeois, Rawley Hughes and Chris Palmer tacked on three additional runs to hold off the Mariners 4-2.

Biola defeated Marymount California last Wednesday by a score of 11-3.

Right-handed starter Gabe Ihrig is credited with the win after five innings that were as flawless and economical as they come. It seemed like Ihrig was throwing a bowling ball more than a baseball because the visiting team seemed unable to create any lift under his pitches. Ihrig never allowed a Mariner runner to reach third base and produced an outstanding 11 ground balls as a result of his ability to induce weak contact.

Moreover, Ihrig had 1,2,3 frames in four of his five innings and never needed to throw more than five pitches in any given plate appearance. He finished with 47 pitches.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead to reinforce Ihrig's success by scoring three runs over the first two innings. After starter Jesse Yancosek retired the first two batters he saw, Largusa deposited a 1-0 middle-in fastball over the left field wall to make it 1-0.

That marks the sixth time this season that Biola has scored in the first inning and continues the Eagles' undefeated streak in contests when they score first. The 10-4 Eagles are 6-0 when they get on the board before their opponents.

Later in the second, spark plugs Colton Worthington and Joey Magro got aboard with no one out on a walk and a double after each worked three-ball counts. Bouregois and Hughes punched their tickets home with sacrifice singles to center and the Eagles were off to the races 3-0.

The Mariners made the Eagles Diamond faithful a bit uneasy in the sixth after Ihrig was removed. An Eric Fields two-rbi single made it a one-run game and put a runner in scoring position with one out. But reliever James Goodwin was able to force a popup and an easy groundout to Magro to prohibit any more damage and maintain Ihrig as the rightful pitcher of record.

Jake Battaglia and Sean McCarrell chipped in clean frames in the seventh and eighth while the Eagles scratched together an insurance run in the seventh on two hits, a sac bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Nick Swizek got two strikeouts in the ninth before deferring to closer Daniel Jang for the final out. Jang now has four saves on the year.

Biola travels to Santa Barbara to face the No. 8 Westmont Warriors this weekend. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
