Tennis Battles Tough Against Holy Names

Facing more top NCAA Division II competition the Eagles fall just short.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Following a day of rain on Sunday, Biola Tennis dried off the courts at the Biola Tennis Center and prepared for another battle with NCAA Division II competition as they hosted Holy Names on Monday afternoon.

The women's team suffered a 7-2 loss, while the men played to another very narrow 5-4 loss.

"We had tough matches today," said Head Coach David Goodman. "The guys lost another close one to a ranked Division II opponent. It's frustrating to lose these types of matches. We need to get a win at this level to really break the ice for us. The women had a tough match as well. Tinisee played another great match and is improving every time she steps on the court."

Tinisee Kandakai played a part in both of the matches the Eagles were able to take from the Hawks in the 7-2 loss. She earned a straight set victory at No. 5 singles (7-5; 6-4) and also worked well with Katie Boesl at No. 3 doubles to earn an 8-2 win.

Outside of those two matches it was a tough day for the Eagles. They managed to keep the other two doubles matches close (8-5 and 8-4) but could not pull out any more wins.

Lauren Lee put up a strong fight in a losing effort at No. 3 singles. She was the only Eagle to force a third set. She did so by winning the first set 6-3. She almost clinched a win in the second set, but ultimately fell 7-5 before losing the third as well.

On the men's side it was a bitter fight for every single match as up and down both teams' lineup there were tough head-to-head matchups.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches to give them a slight edge heading into singles, but they were unable to finish it and suffered their third 5-4 loss early in the season.

Lucas Lee and Luke Mountain provided some great entertainment at No. 1 doubles as they duked it out in each game of their match. They were so evenly matched with their opponent that they had to go to a super tiebreaker to end the match. Lee and Mountain won the breaker 7-2 to clinch the 2-1 advantage for BU. Philip Westwood and Milos Zoric won their match at No. 2 for the Eagles' other doubles win.

In singles the two teams fought through a pair of three-set matches and another that took some extra games to decide a winner. The top of the lineup is where things were most evenly matched as No. 1 and No. 2 both went an extra set.

Lee was playing in the No. 1 position today and earned his win by winning the second and third sets (4-6; 6-3; 6-3). That gave him two victories over Bernardo Moraes on Monday as Moraes was also on the doubles team that Lee and Mountain defeated. It was Lee's first win at No. 1 singles this season.
Westwood was playing No. 2 singles and was a part of the other three-set match. He dropped the first set and won the second set to force it to three. However, the physical fatigue of already playing a competitive doubles match and two full, competitive singles sets caught up to him and he fell 6-2 in the third set.

Derek James was the only other Eagle, besides Lee, to earn a win in singles. He improved to 5-0 in singles this season by defeating his opponent in the No. 3 slot. He earned a decisive 6-3; 602 straight set win.

The women's team dropped to 2-5 following the loss and the men became 1-4. The men are back in action at home on Tuesday afternoon as they host Chapman at 1:30 p.m.
