Fifth Inning Comes Up Roses for Biola

11 individual Eagles scored a run in the eight-run win.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After a few knocks at the door in the first and fourth innings netted Biola three runs, the Eagles broke through with a battering ram in the fifth inning. Biola defeated Marymount California 11-3 after sending 14 men to plate in the fifth and blowing the score open with eight runs.

Starter Wyatt Haccou pitched five innings with four strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. The junior righty induced two important double plays in the first and third innings to keep the opposing offense in check. Haccou's ERA at Eagles Diamond is now at 2.45 after allowing just one hit and one unearned run on Wednesday.

Wyatt got progressively better as the game went on, especially with his offspeed stuff, and never stopped competing at any point," said Haccou's batterymate River Fawley. "He got some key ground balls and really finished the game strong. That fifth inning may have been the best frame he had all day."

Haccou finished the game by retiring the last five Mariners hitters he saw.

The Eagles provided Haccou with an early lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Colton Worthington followed his two hits in Tuesday's win with an RBI single to score Jeremy Barth to score the first run, with the second coming on a wild pitch in Joey Magro's at-bat.

Worthington finished Wednesday with two RBI's and lead the team with three hits in five at-bats. He was also one of the 11 Eagles that scored a run in the victory.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles used six hits and five free passes to turn 3-1 game into an 11-1 game. Joey Magro reached base safely in both of his plate appearances during the inning, a two-run double and a walk, and Fawley got his first RBI as an Eagle by shooting a 3-0 fastball through the right side.

"I went up to the plate today with confidence in the preparation work I did in batting practice and just wanted to beat the pitcher," said Fawley. "I got a green light on the 3-0 pitch and it was as simple as swing at a pitch I liked and having fun playing baseball."

The junior transfer went 2-for-3 on Wednesday in his first start behind the plate.

Biola used four relievers over the final four innings to finalize its second straight win. James Goodwin and Sam Thorne both contributed clean frames and Thorne shutdown the Mariners in the ninth with two strikeouts. Goodwin's ERA at home remains at 0.00 in two appearances.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow morning as they welcome the Corban Warriors to La Mirada for a double header. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
