Eagles Fall To NCAA No. 24 CSULA

Biola takes on an established NCAA Division II opponent and gains valuable experience in a loss.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Less than 24 hours after Biola Women's Tennis completed a gritty 5-4 victory in its season-opener they were back at it again in an afternoon match with NCAA Division II member CSU Los Angeles.

The Eagles suffered a 9-0 loss to the Golden Eagles, who are ranked No. 24 currently in the NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll.

"Cal State LA is a solid Division II team that competes in the PacWest," said Head Coach David Goodman. "It was a great opportunity for us to see what the level was like at the Division II level and understand what we need to improve to take the next step."

The Golden Eagles were especially amped up for this match, because it was not only their first home match of the season, but it was their official season-opener as well.

CSULA is an affiliate member of Biola's future conference, the PacWest Conference,. It competes with the PacWest in tennis, while competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association for all other sports.

All singles matches ended in straight sets, with Katie Boesl pushing her opponent the furthest, forcing her second set to go to 6-3.

All three doubles matches were decisive in favor of the Golden Eagles too, with Brooke Sanford and Lauren Lee's 8-2 loss at No. 2 being the closest a Biola pairing would get.

"Cal State LA has a very deep team and is well-coached," said Goodman. "It's always disappointing to lose, but I think we learned a lot about what we need to do to improve before we start our conference schedule [on Saturday]."

Biola drops to 1-1 on the season. It continues its busy week on the road at Caltech on Friday and then returns home to host Hope International in its Golden State Athletic Conference opener on Saturday morning.
