Jimmy and Joey Headline 2-1 Opening Day Win

Biola starts the season 1-0 for the eighth straight season

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The highs and lows this extra-inning game contained made it feel like a full season in itself. But the advantaged afforded by Jimmy Gallarda's seven shutout innings set up Joey Magro for a walk-off RBI single in the 10th to give Biola a 2-1 win on opening day.

Magro was the sixth batter of the 10th inning for the Eagles and converted his opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs by hitting a single through the right side to score right fielder Phil Knapp.

"That's the first walk-off hit I've had as a baseball player, but I didn't try to do anything over-the-top besides staying back and taking it the other way," said Magro. "The new pitcher Antelope Valley had a ton of run of his two-seam fastball I tried to focus on keeping a simple approach."

This game was the archetype of a pitcher's duel, as Gallarda and Pioneers' starter Tyler Sharp traded zeros until the late innings. The Eagles were able to get to Sharp for a single run in the second on an RBI single from Ricky Perez gave the Eagles a slim 1-0 lead. But the UAV righty pressed on and finished with eight strong innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Sharp retired eight straight Eagles from the last out of the third inning through the first out of the sixth.

Gallarda countered with a 11 out run of his own from the second inning through the first out of the fifth and finished with seven shutout innings.

"Jimmy really settled down in the middle innings and did a great job at locating his fastball and pitching to groundball contact," said Magro. "He was locating his stuff really well all game and keeping the ball at knee level."

With four strikeouts and only one walk on the afternoon, Gallarda finished with a quality start and game score of 78. You can read more about game score here: http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/game-score/

However, the Pioneers would not go quietly to let Gallarda get the win, even with two outs in the ninth inning. UAV made the most of an error and a catcher's interference call by scratching together a run to tie the score at ones. Designated hitter Jake Harrison knocked in the tying run and ended the day 1-for-3 with a walk.

Once the tenth rolled around, the Eagles 11-to-5 advantage in hits was simply too much for the Pioneers to withstand. Knapp's double with one out in the extra frame got the ball rolling for Magro's single to earn the victory and hand Sean McCarrell his first win of the year. The senior righty worked a clean frame in the top half of the tenth.

These same two teams turnaround to play a doubleheader on Saturday at 11:00 p.m.
