Eagles’ Scoring Peaks Again Versus Rocky Mountain

A stellar 45 minutes nets Biola five goals and all the cushion it needs to beat Rocky Mountain.

McKenna Marmelstein scores two goals in Biola's 5-1 win over Rocky Mountain
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The verdict is in. Three matches and a 3-0 record was all it took to demonstrate how ferocious the 2016 Biola Women's Soccer offense can be when everything clicks. Tonight, three more Eagles scored their first goals of the season and a 22 players saw at least 14 minutes of action in a commanding 5-1 win over Rocky Mountain.

"I've been pleasantly surprised by our ability to score in bunches, and if we keep that going we're gonna be hard to beat," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "We were a bit shaky in the first half, but Christina Rodriguez had an excellent game and really bailed us out."

Even though Rodriguez was prevented from earning her third shutout to start the season, the Eagles really depended on all eight of her saves tonight. For a good 65 minutes, Rodriguez silenced a Battlin' Bears team that scored five goals against Bethesda two days ago. She also played a big role throughout the game when the Eagles decided to keep possession by dumping it to the keeper.

That stable foundation allowed Biola enough time to settle in, control the ball and eventually have a safe lead by halftime. The momentum for Biola started in the positive direction right at minute 14, when senior captain Taylor Venegas broke away for her first goal of the season. After finding the ball at her feet just past midfield, Venegas raced down the right side and weaved around three defenders before putting the ball past the drawn out keeper with her dominant right foot.

The floodgates seemed to open from there as Ashley Ramirez followed up 20 later with a goal of her own. There was nothing the goalkeeper could do to stop Ramirez' beautiful one-timer to top left corner.

Janae Megorden passed the ball right to her fellow midfielder just as she was sizing up to shoot and Ramirez sent a screamer into the net to make it 2-0 just before halftime. Later in the second half, Ramirez would put away another ball in a similar fashion, this time from Venegas, to finish the match with two goals on her season so far.

And last, but not least, McKenna Marmelstein poured on her first two goals of the season to give the Eagles a total of eight individual goal scorers through three matches. Both of Marmelstein's goals would come on set pieces, using her head on the first after Kayla White swung in a wonderful corner four minutes into the second half. Marmelstein would also score on a penalty kick awarded in the 58th minute after Venegas was tripped up trying for another breakaway goal.

"We know that anybody on our team can put the ball in the back of the net and I really like that this team doesn't just ride the back of a player or two," said Brunelle. "Anyone at any moment can step up when needed, and as a coaching staff we just need to figure out how to keep them going and give the right scorers the opportunity each game."

Despite all the scoring, the one statistical footnote for this match may have been how surprising it was to see an opponent score against Biola in the second half. The Eagles only surrendered eight second half goals in 22 matches last season and had only allowed seven second half shots in the two matches previous to this one. It will be a thing to attend to in next match, as Biola's opponent, Colorado Christian, has scored three of their four goals this season in the second half.

The Cougars are currently 2-0 and will arrive at Al Barbour field to play a match at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
