Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the fourth time in as many matches Biola Men's Soccer earned itself a shutout victory. Tonight it was a 2-0 score line as Leonardo Contreras and Jarrett Pugh scored to help lift the team to another non-conference victory.
 
As you compared these two teams before the match all indicators pointed to a Biola victory, as UAV had just suffered a pair of three-goal losses to lower-ranked Golden State Athletic Conference teams. However, the game played a whole lot closer than anticipated throughout a chippy 90 minutes of soccer on Al Barbour Field.
 
The Pioneers came storming out of the gates in the first half and dominated possession for a large chunk of the first half. UAV put up four shots within the first 10 minutes of play and seemed to control the ball in their offensive third for at least 80 percent of the first quarter of the match.
 
Once the UAV work rate began to slow down just a bit Biola seized its opportunity to tilt the scale of momentum the other direction. The Eagles began to catch up in scoring chances until they were finally able to convert in the 30^th minute of the half when Leo Contreras buried a free kick taken from just outside the left line of the 18-yard box.
 
It was the senior's second score of the season, and that would not be the last he'd be heard from on this chilly Wednesday evening in La Mirada.
 
Neither team would manage a score for the rest of the half, but there was plenty of extracurricular activity to keep the referee on his toes. There were three total yellow cards issued in the first half as two UAV players were disciplined between the 30^th and 38^th minutes and Biola was given a warning just before leaving the field for the break.
 
From the time after Contreras' goal until about 20 minutes into the second half the midfield was like a warzone as neither team's offense could really break through and force a quality run.  The Eagles definitely had a majority of possession during this time, but two offside runs stymied any production.
 
Finally, just a few moments after his fellow senior captain Devin Leon had a shot denied by the crossbar, Contreras worked himself into good position right at the far post when he caught glimpse of a streaking Jarrett Pugh and served him the ball for a one-timer right at the penalty spot.
 
Pugh put the ball away with a clean strike to double the Eagles' advantage in the match with just under 10 minutes to play. The junior midfielder is now tied for the team-lead with two goals this season.
 
After that, Biola managed to maintain its composure over the final few minutes of play as more yellow cards were handed out by the referee in a rather ugly end of a match.
 
Ultimately, the Eagles earn a 2-0 shutout win to improve to 4-1 on the year and hand Igor Puglia his fourth-straight shutout. The keeper made two saves and faced 15 Antelope Valley shots.
 
Biola is back in action at home on Saturday when it hosts UC Merced at 7:00 p.m.
