Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. – Biola Women's Soccer remains undefeated, soaring away with a 4-1 win over Colorado Christian on Friday afternoon. Senior captain, Taylor Venegas, tallied a pair of goals, while Janae Megorden and Madyson Brown netted their firsts of the season in the winning effort.
 
It's been four years since the Eagles dueled with the Cougars, and last time, the kitties came out on top. CCU just happens to be head coach Erin Brunelle's alma mater, and this time, curiosity killed the cats.
 
The Cougars kicked off and launched the first attack of the match. Biola took a few minutes to settle in and establish possession, which quickly paid off with a corner in the ninth minute. Junior midfielder, Ashley Ramirez played short to a wide-open defender, Brianna Mikalson, who launched a beautiful ball from the right side finding Venegas at the far post. Venegas headed the ball past goalkeeper Shaya Lawrence, putting the Eagles on the board.
 
The goal sparked desire for more as Biola's midfield came alive with fantastic combinations from Ramirez, Megorden and Jessie Burns.
 
"We've been able to work really well offensively so far…our midfield has been huge for us and they've been able to create a ton of chances," said Venegas.
 
Biola continued connecting short passes, picking up the tempo as the game progressed. The Cougars looked to pounce on any mistakes, winning many 50/50 balls, keeping the Eagles on their toes. Several threatening balls entered into Eagle territory, but were easily handled by a confident Christina Rodriguez.
 
In the 36^th minute, Mikalson, who has proven to be a valuable asset attacking from the back, rifled in yet another cross into the box. Freshman forward, Sarah Jefferies, headed the ball back across where a poised Megorden easily tapped it home for a first touch finish.
 
The second half was a bit scattered as both teams struggled to keep the ball down on the pitch.
 
After relentless minutes of high pressure, CCU's tactic looked promising as Madyson Brown was charged with a handball just outside the Eagles' box. While substitute Maddison Hogan pounced on the opportunity, she failed to convert for the Cougars and sent the ball straight into the steady gloves of Rodriguez.
 
The Cougars' back line began clawing away with everything they had to keep the Eagles away from the net, but were unable to deter the constant onslaught from Samantha Verduzco, Alexis Lee and freshman standout Paula-Marie Labate, who nearly netted a goal in the first half. Lebate notched herself an assist instead with a long ball into the box – an effective strategy for the day – where she found a charging Brown, who converted the goal.
 
The Cougars quickly responded only five minutes later with a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Rodriguez came leaping off of her line, but the crowded box of jerseys hindered her judgment and the scramble ended with the ball trickling into an empty net. CCU forward Mariah Fredericks deflected the unassisted goal.
 
Despite giving up the shutout, Biola hammered the nails into the coffin in the 89^th minute when Ramirez served a lofted ball into Venegas, who neatly skimmed it over the keeper's outstretched fingertips.
 
Coach Brunelle was pleased with another good win and her team's ability to open the floodgates in terms of goals scored. More importantly, she is confident in the team's unity.
 
"We've had some personal lows in the midst of the highs and the girls have combated that well, not letting their emotions get the best of them," said Brunelle. 
 
The Eagles will turn their focus on preserving the streak and return to Al Barbour field on Tuesday to face Antelope Valley at 7:00 p.m.
