Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Biola Volleyball finally had a chance to breathe free and easy on Friday night as it had a three-set match for the second time in the last eight matches. The Eagles took care of Golden State Athletic Conference foe Arizona Christian in straight sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) during its annual day trip to Phoenix.
Â
Biola took a small squad with them to the Arizona Christian campus and allowed for some of its team to take some time to rest up and get rejuvenated for the next leg of the season.
Â
Twelve players got in the game for Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer and each of them played well as BU finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage, six blocks, and most importantly three more set wins.
Â
Alyx Dunham and
Olivia Sorensen stood out among the BU attackers on Friday evening. Dunham led the team with 11 kills spread among her team-high 27 attacks. Sorenson was among the team leaders in hitting percentage at .600 as she put up six kills on an economical 10 attack attempts.
Â
Stephanie Jewett again took advantage of a chance to take a bunch of swings. The sophomore was the team leader in hitting with eight kills in her 10 attempts (.800).
Â
It was good to see the Eagles' operating at peak performance for all three sets as it stood in severe contrast to the story from the Hope International match earlier this week.
Â
A big part of the reason for the BU success during this match was the play of the team's setter tandem of
Brinley Beresford and
Tori Moons. Beresford accumulated 20-plus assists through the first two sets and would eventually end with 26 as she led the team. Moons averaged five assists in each of her three sets as she finished the match with 15 overall.
Â
Arizona Christian's best chance to steal a set came during the first game of the match. The Firestorm led as late as at 20-19 and had all the motivation of playing in front of their home crowd and trying to dethrone the No. 15 team in the nation.
Â
That chance fell by the wayside though as BU won the final six points of the set to earn the 25-20 set win. The first four of those six consecutive points came as a direct result of ACU errors as the Firestorm's upset flamed out late.
Â
To ensure no more worries in the match Biola never trailed at all in the second and third sets.
Â
Biola improves to 10-5 (2-0 GSAC) following this latest win. The Eagles have now won three straight and six of their last seven. Arizona Christian is still in the very early stages of its season. The Firestorm fall to just 1-3 (0-1 GSAC).
Â
The Eagles finally return home for their next match. BU hosts Chapman on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference battle.
