Box Score TORRANCE, Calif. --- Biola's offense was working like a well-oiled machine from the opening whistle in the team's first match of the season, riding three first half goals to a comfortable 6-0 win against the Marymount Mariners. The front six of Head Coach
Erin Brunelle's formation applied relentless pressure on the Marymount back line all game, giving incoming freshmen
Sarah Jeffries,
Paula-Marie Labate and
Annmarie Alvarez the opportunity to score their first goals as Eagles.
After
Samantha Verduzco opened up the scoring in the 18th minute, and Jeffries made the score 2-0 just 14 minutes later. Verduzco commanded all the defense's attention with a run down the right side and made a slick pass to place the ball at Jeffries' feet so she could take care of things with only the keeper to beat.
Labate followed up with the third goal of the half just a few minutes before the 15-minute intermission. The freshman from Salem, Ore. took advantage of a loose ball created by a
Kayla White corner and got to the ball first amidst the scramble to tuck it in the net.
Verduzco and Jeffries would finish with two scores apiece in the six-goal output, and the team finished with 17 shots combined. One of the final shots of the match for Biola came from Alvarez, who joined the collection of scorers with a goal assisted by
Brittni Coffeen in the 74th minute. This is the first time Biola has scored more than five goals in a match since posting eight against the Bethesda Flames on Sept. 1, 2014.
"Sam Verduzco started the season really well with this phenomenal game today and Sarah made smart use of her pace to set up good finesse finishes," said Brunelle. "[The scoring] was really a product of our midfielders and attackers combining really well today. We took the space on the field Marymount gave us and made key adjustments for the goals to start rolling in."
The Biola back line was just as stifling as the attacking effort, giving
Christina Rodriguez her first clean sheet of the season and limiting the Mariners to seven shots on goal from distance.
"The fact that all the shots were from distance played into Christina's hands," said Brunelle. "We had the benefit of upfield pressure to keep Marymount at bay most of the time and our back line took care of the rest because they're familiar with each other."
With the 1-0 start, Biola continues its recent dominance in road matches after posting an 8-1-1 mark away from Al Barbour Field a year ago. The win also avenged a 2-0 loss to the Mariners at Biola last season.
Brunelle's squad has their home opener scheduled for 4:30 p.m. this Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Al Barbour Field.
