Biola Baseball Shines During Summer League Postseason Play

Jeremy Barth, Sam Thorne, Sean McCarrell and Andy Smith played great all across the country this summer.

LA MIRADA, Calif. —- Three members of Biola Baseball capitalized on the team's end of season momentum to help their summer teams to playoff success.

Sam Thorne and Sean McCarrell won league championships with the San Diego Force and OC Surf, respectively. Great Lakes League All-Star Jeremy Barth batted .429 in the playoffs for the Xenia Scouts, helping his team reach the league semifinals and win the most games for one summer in team history.

Thorne was the reliable offensive machine Biola knows him to be for the Force, scoring 13 runs and collecting 25 hits in 19 games for a .425 batting average. The catcher went 2-for-4 during game one of the Southern California League Championships and watched Biola alum Andy Smith go 3-for-5 in the lead off spot for the Force in the game two clincher. Smith was the Eagles' starting shortstop in 2015 and is slated to return to the team as an assistant coach in 2017.

Right-handed pitcher Sean McCarrell was a very reliable late inning option for the Surf during their Sunset League campaign, posting a respectable 2.94 ERA through 11 appearances. McCarrell finished the summer with 14 strikeouts compared to only two walks in 18.1 innings pitched. He also posted 10 consecutive scoreless innings  across five consecutive appearances from June 11 to July 17. The OC Surf became the inaugural Sunset League champions on July 31.

Barth finished his summer with 47 hits in 46 games as the Scouts' everyday right fielder, showing a well rounded offensive repertoire. Barth flashed some speed with eight stolen bases and reached double digits in doubles (12), runs (22), and RBI's (22).

Thorne, McCarrell and Barth will return to Eagles Diamond for fall ball in the coming weeks to prepare for the 2017 season.
