LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Just a week removed from another Golden State Athletic Conference Championship Biola Track & Field traveled down the road to Jack Kemp Stadium at Occidental College for the 2016 Oxy Invitational.
Â
The teams hit four NAIA automatic qualifying standards and three provisional standards in a solid day at the track. The student-athletes came out ready to compete and completely focused on getting to nationals, which can be a challenge just one week after all the focus was on the conference championships.
Â
Wes Noyes led the way on the men's side as he hit a provisional standard in the 800-meter (1:53.5) and finished less than half a second in front of his teammate,
Andrew Daedler, who was just shy of the standard at (1:53.9).
Aditya Lal also ran in that 800m race and finished back a few seconds at 1:56.
Â
"All of the guys ran very well. The guys in the 800 asserted themselves very well," said Henning. "Adi ran very aggressively and just fell about 100 meters short of a qualifying mark. Wes did a great job and closed very well, as did Andrew. Andrew just needs to work on getting in better position earlier on in the race."
Â
Ryan Thompson was another highlight from the men's competition. He completed his 5,000-meter run in 15:21.56 to finish strong in a group of over 100 men.
Â
The women's 5k was the true highlight of the day as four women earned automatic qualifying standards and one more hit a provisional time.
Kellian Hunt smashed a 24-year-old school record by 13 seconds when she finished 15
th overall and finished with a 16:51.
Â
Anika Gasner (17:11),
Lyndee Dawson (17:13) and
Stephanie Croy (17:33) all finished with 'A' qualifier times as well, while
Michelle Clark (17:47) managed a 'B' provisional time in another remarkable event for the Eagles.
Â
The 1,500-meter was a slower race, but
Stephanie Chaires and
Melissa Ledesma did a fine job running their races and put forth good showings.
Â
"Stephanie really asserted herself by taking the lead to try to go after a fast time," said Henning. "Melissa held on for a good portion of the race and showed a lot of resolve."
Â
Chaires finished near the top of her heat and placed 40
th overall in the event with a 4:48. Ledesma was not too far back with a 4:56.
Â
Emily Ransom and
Ilima Kung battled hard through the 3,000m steeplechase. Ransom earned a provisional standard with an 11:25.24 and finished inside of the top-15. Kung had battled fatigue all week and was not at 100 percent heading into her race, but she still finished with one of her fastest times ever and a 17
th-place finish (11:33).
Â
It was the final day of pole vaulting before the NAIA Outdoor National Championships and it was a good one.
Nicole Falkenstein came one inch shy of Taylor McCahon's school record with a 3.70m vault. She will have another chance at that record in a few weeks.
Christina Clark finished with a 3.15m effort in her final go of the season.
Â
"It was a really good day for us," said Henning.
