Season Comes To A Close In Santa Barbara

Biola finishes 31-27 after suffering a 10-7 loss in the GSAC Tournament Championship.

Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- In a span of just under two full calendar years Biola Baseball more than doubled its season win total as the team went from just 15 wins in 2014 to 31 in 2016. That 31 number is where the win total will lay to rest as Biola fell just short in a 10-7 loss to The Master's College during the final day of the 2016 Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger threw all he had at those pesky Mustangs in an attempt to get Biola its first-ever GSAC Tournament crown. The Eagles slugged it out with TMC from start to finish, but a four-run top of ninth inning carried the Mustangs to the win.

Eric Diomartich, just two days removed from a 144-pitch outing on Monday morning, got the start for Sullenger and did all that was asked of him through the first two innings of the game. He had a 1, 2, 3 first inning and allowed just one run in the top of the second. He exited the game with a 2-1 lead in tow because of some Biola bopping in the bottom of the first.

The Eagles opened the scoring early as the Mustangs' starter, Danny Lutz, was only able to retire one batter before JD Meyer took him deep and put the Eagles in control with the first two runs of the game.

That lead held steady until the top of the third inning when TMC exploded for four runs on four hits when Jimmy Gallarda entered the game for the first of what would be three innings for him. He also pitched on Monday, going seven innings and carrying the Eagles to a slim win over No. 6 Westmont.

It did not take long for Biola to answer back with four runs of their own to retake the lead. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning Rawley Hughes showed tremendous plate discipline to extend the inning with a walk, then Jonas Wellan loaded the bases when he reached on an error. After that Jerron Largusa stepped up and drilled a ball to the left-center gap and came all the way around to score on one of the three big plays of the game.

The second big play of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was after the Mustangs had scored once more to tie the game at six that Jeremy Barth stepped into the box and crushed a two-out solo homerun that put the Eagles back in the driver's seat and feeling very, very good. Barth had a monster ballgame, going 3-for-4 with that homerun and two runs scored.

Unfortunately for Biola the third big moment of the game was not one that went in their favor. After Daniel Jang came on to attempt his fourth save of the tournament The Master's College got a one-out, two-run go-ahead homerun off that bat of David Sheaffer, who also went 3-for-4, that took all the air out of the Eagles' sails.

Biola was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth inning and watched its season come to a close from the first base dugout at Westmont College. The Eagles finish the year at 31-27 and were 26-13 from March through today.
