LA MIRADA, Calif. – It was overcast, hazy and was drizzling a little bit as Biola Men's Tennis hosted the Phoenix-based Arizona Christian Firestorm on Saturday morning.
Â
The weather conditions were certainly not what ACU was accustomed too, and it took the Firestorm a little while to get going before they ultimately took a 5-4 win over Head Coach
Brent Worthington's Biola squad.
Â
The Eagles had a quick 2-1 advantage right after doubles despite playing down a man with
Luke Mountain unavailable today.
Andrew Greenfield filled his spot, playing No. 6 doubles and partnering with
Michael Vartuli at No. 3 doubles.
Â
Biola squeezed out a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles as
Philip Westwood and
Joe Turnquist improved to 5-4 together this year.
Lucas Lee and
David Garcia played together for the first time and worked very well together en route to an 8-3 win.
Â
Singles was a bit more of a challenge as ACU really hit its stride in the individual competition. The Firestorm got wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 in order to clinch the match by just one win over the home Eagles squad.
Â
As the final match to finish, Tyler Cawthorne and
Lucas Lee played three full sets at No. 2 singles before Cawthorne worked a 5-6; 6-3; 6-4 victory to give ACU a walk-off match win.
Â
Biola falls to 4-5 (2-3 GSAC) while Arizona Christian moves to 4-5 (2-2 GSAC) following Saturday's competition. Coach Worthington's team is back at it on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. as they host Palm Beach Atlantic in a non-conference matchup.
