Shutout Secures Series Sweep

A seven-run first inning relieved all pressure from the Eagles as they charged to a 10-0 win.

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- With a 10-0 road win over Hope International on Thursday evening Biola University Baseball earned its first three-game series sweep since it beat William Jessup three times in early-March of 2015.

The Eagles dominated this series with the Royals as they outscored Hope International 33-16 over the course of the three games, scoring in double-digits all three times out. If you wipe out a nine-run ninth inning for HIU in Wednesday's ballgame BU had a 33-7 advantage through a large chunk of the series.

With a fourth consecutive series victory already in tow today's ballgame became all about securing the sweep, which is something that Head Coach Jay Sullenger's lineup wanted to ensure from the very start of this ballgame played under the lights at Valencia High School.

Before the Royals' starter, Eli Davidann, could record the first out of the game the Eagles had a 4-0 advantage. Alec de Watteville was the man who put a charge into one with the bases loaded to lead the game off in a big way. His grand slam was his 10th homerun of the season and he's now up to an astonishing 40 RBI.

The runs did not stop coming as the Eagles piled on seven runs in the first inning as they batted around. Biola had four hits, three for extra bases, and benefitted from a Hope International error during the first at bat of the evening.

That quick start gave Eric Diomartich a bit extra time to warm up before he got to head out to the bump in the bottom of the first inning. The extra time did him well as the senior went out and had yet another inspiring performance for Sullenger and his teammates. He took a no-hit bid through the first few innings and ultimately held the Royals batters to just three hits total over the course of a dominant six innings of work.

Diomartich had it all going for him as the night rolled along. He struck out eight HIU hitters and waslked just one as he seemed to get stronger and stronger with more time on the rubber. He struck out the side in a hitless final inning of work.

Biola had upped its lead to 9-0 by the time Diomartich handed the ball over to Buddy Brouwer to start the seventh. The Eagles scored one in the third and another in the fifth. Every batter was producing up and down the order as BU got an RBI single from Jerron Largusa in that third inning and the fifth inning run came around when Jonas Wellan walked with the bases loaded.

Brouwer was just as effective as Dio over the course of his three innings to close out the game. The junior allowed two hits and struck two out as he faced just one batter over the minimum as he slammed the door on the Royals and ensured the Eagles would work their way to a .500 record with this win in the final game of the series. After today's outing Buddy is up to 25 innings pitched this year with just a miniscule 0.72 earned run average.

Biola hit a landmark with this win as the team battled all the way back to an even 17-17 season record. It is the first time since 2013 that Biola has had a .500 record at this point in the season. The Eagles also move to 10-8 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. That record is good enough to put the Eagles just a half-game behind RV Menlo College for fourth place in the conference.

Biola Baseball takes some time off for the Easter break before returning to the diamond.with a Tuesday doubleheader at Antelope Valley early next week.
