Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On Wednesday Biola reached double digits in the run column for the fourth time in 10 games and rode three homeruns to a 13-9 victory over Hope International. With the win, the Eagles are now 9-8 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, have won two games in each of their last five series and are 11-3 in the month of March.
Â
Biola was a ticking time bomb at the plate for the first four innings. The Eagles were held scoreless by Royals starter Dominic Potlongo despite having chances with two runners in scoring position in the second and third innings.Â
Â
The detonator reached zero in the top of the fifth inning as Alec deWatteville his ninth homerun of the year, a three run shot to left, that put the Eagles in the driver's seat. Thereafter,
JD Meyer and the Eagles continued the onslaught by scoring 10 more runs and giving the Eagles an insurmountable 13-run lead. A good chunk of that scoring is thanks to a Meyer grand slam in the sixth and a
Rawley Hughes solo shot in the eighth.
Â
Despite the offense, the story of the game was really the pitching of Eagles starter Jimmmy Gallarda, who earned his third win of the year by putting on a pitching clinic over six shutout innings.
Â
Gallarda held firm grasp on a perfect game through five innings before surrendering a leadoff single to Sam Weaver in the sixth. Through five, Gallarda only allowed one ball to leave the infield and retired fifteen Royals batters consecutively on 66 pitches.
Â
He finished his outing with no runs and fives strikeouts, allowing only two runners to reach base.
Â
Then things got undesirably stressful in the bottom of the ninth inning when Eagle relievers surrendered nine runs to HIU on six hits. With two runners on and two out, Head Coach
Jay Sullenger turned to
Sam Thorne to get the final out and slam the door on the Royals comeback.
Â
After surrendering a walk, Thorne induced the groundball that finally won the game for Biola, earning his second save of the year.
Â
Biola will try to get its first conference sweep of the year tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in the final game against Hope International. The game will be played at Valencia High School.Â
