A Hopeful Comeback

Biola falls behind early thanks to a big inning for HIU, but the Eagles overcome in a 10-7 win.

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- While the game did not get started on the right foot it sure ended that way as Biola Baseball came from behind to earn a 10-7 win over Hope International on Tuesday evening.

The game was played under the lights at Valencia High School as the Eagles opened the season series against the Royals.

HIU jumped out to a 5-0 lead by piling on against Micah Beyer in the bottom of the second inning. All five runs scored courtesy five two-out hits in that second inning as the Eagles had such a hard time getting out of the inning.

Hope International's starter, Jason Balades, held the Eagles off the board through the first four innings. However, he lost control of a pitch and hit Andres Rodriguez to start Biola's first rally of the game.

After a JD Meyer single Alec de Watteville found his way on base with a single and Rodriguez and Meyer made their way around the base paths with the help of an HIU error.

This helped the Eagles get on the board, but it still was not enough to pull them back close enough to really make the game feel competitive.

After that five-run inning back in the second Beyer settled in and found a way to post back-to-back-to-back scoreless innings. In the sixth inning he let the bases get loaded with two outs as Hope International threatened to blow the game open. Gabe Ihrig relieved him once the bases loaded up. After hitting the first batter Ihrig got a fly out to end the inning.

The real work got done in the seventh and eighth innings as the Biola offense got rolling at just the right time. The Eagles scored eight runs on six hits and an HIU error over the course of those two innings to steal the game away.

Jeremy Barth and de Watteville were among the driving forces in that late run production as Barth managed a three-run double to tie the game at six in the seventh and then helped extend the lead with an RBI single in the eighth. De Watteville ended the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in yet another fantastic outing.

Barth and Meyer joined de Watteville as Eagles with three hits in the ballgame. Ihrig was on the bump when the Eagles took the lead, which helped him benefit with his third victory of the season.

Daniel Jang locked the game down with two innings at the end of the ballgame. The sophomore allowed two hits and one run to the Royals but held them at bay enough to earn Biola its 10th win of March.

Biola improves to 15-17 (8-8 GSAC) with the series-opening win. Hope International drops to 12-16-1 (6-10 GSAC) with the loss. The series continues with a 3:00 p.m. game at Biola on Wednesday afternoon.
